A drink driver, who was caught travelling through a town centre whilst nearly 3 times the limit, is bracing for a 3-year ban.
Cory Daniels, 21, of Broadway Crescent in Binstead, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday) where he pleaded guilty to drink driving, giving a breathalyser reading of 93 microgrammes – nearly thrice the limit of 35.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Daniels was caught behind the wheel on the afternoon of the 28th February after a member of the public alerted the Police that a swaying man had got off the Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head Fastcat service. He was seen getting into a vehicle before proceeding to drive off.
Jason Spelman, prosecuting, told the court how Police officers noticed Daniels was slurring his words and noticeably smelt of alcohol when they pulled him over in his Island Facility Services (IFS)-livered van on Cross Street, Ryde.
The court heard from defence solicitor, Oscar Vincent, that on the day before the arrest his client had been out in Portsmouth, where he attended a social event. It is here that Daniels consumed what must’ve been an excessive amount of alcohol, before having a few alcoholic beverages with his lunch on the day of the offence.
Mr Vincent explained to the court that Daniels had made the decision to drive the short distance home from the pier.
A letter from the 21-year-old, which was handed to the bench, expressed his regrets and remorse.
In the letter, Daniel explained to the Magistrates that he takes full responsibility of his actions and has learned from his mistakes. He said that this has been a ‘big wake up call’ and that he will take steps to ensure he will never reoffend.
Cory Daniels was previously convicted of drink driving in 2024 and received a 12-month ban, and therefore now faces a 3-year ban.
The case has been adjourned for sentencing on 12th June.
Great outcome, being this is his 2nd time, let’s hope he learns
from this, obviously didn’t in the past, if he does it again
a lifetime ban should be the punishment.
