A drink driver found to be almost 3x the limit after he crashed into a parked van, then knocked on the victim’s door to inform them of the smash.
Joseph Marshall, 46, of Newport Road in Cowes, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (Tuesday).
As previously reported by Island Echo, the collision, which occurred near Cowes Medical Centre, involved 3 vehicles, including the defendant’s Volkswagen Touran, which collided with a parked MG which then smashed into a Ford Transit.
The court heard from prosecutor Jason Spelman that a resident living on Newport Road heard a loud bang. It was then that the witness contacted the Police and realised Marshall had crashed into her husband’s work van, which was described as a ‘write-off’.
When the Police arrived on scene, they found the defendant still present; however, when speaking to him, it was clear that he had consumed alcohol before the accident.
Marshall was then arrested and taken to Newport Police station, where he was breathalysed, providing an evidential result of 103 microgrammes – almost 3x the limit of 35.
Oscar Vincent, defending, told the court how the defendant was fully cooperative with the Police having provided a roadside test and happily got taken to Newport Police Station.
The court heard how Marshall has been working with the elite intervention of psychosis team for 2 years after admitting to using alcohol as a supplementary coping mechanism and suffering from crippling anxiety.
The defendant has been handed an interim 6-month driving ban whilst he awaits sentencing on 9th June.
