Around 6 kilometres – or 3.7 miles – of The Downs between Brading and Newport is to be resurfaced by Island Roads from next week.
From Monday (25th July) resurfacing works will take place on Brading Down Road between Brading and the junction with Ashey Road (near the sea mark) over 7 nights. Then, after a week’s break, Mersley Down Road from Ashey Road to the Newport Shute junction will be resurfaced over 5 nights from Wednesday 10th August.
The remaining stretch of The Downs from Newport Shute to Down End is not being resurfaced during this period of works.
Although the resurfacing will be undertaken at night to minimise disruption, the closure will take place at the same time as resurfacing works on Newport Road, Apse Heath – one of the most appropriate diversion routes. Newport Road, Apse Heath will be closed for 3 nights from Monday 25th July, although works will begin at the later time of 20:00.
The works on The Downs will be undertaken between the hours of 18:30 and 06:00, during which time a road closure will be in place. There will be no weekend working.
Project manager Derek Benfield, said:
“People who use this section of road will be aware that it is in need of improvement. It is a well-used stretch of the network and we hope that by undertaking the work at night we will keep disruption to a minimum.
“We thank road users in advance for their patience and hope that any short-term inconvenience will be offset by the benefits of having this section of the strategic road network brought up to standard.”
