Osborne Coburg lifted the Isle of Wight Junior ‘A’ Cup by beating AFC Wootton at Beatrice Avenue last night (Thursday) with 2 late second half goals from James and Harry Green. The Burg achieved their victory despite the absence of prolific scorer Mark Taylor, who was apparently stuck in traffic on the mainland and missed his ferry home. However, it was no easy victory for the Division 2 champions with Wootton taking an early lead, which they preserved until the last half hour of the game. The Burg started on the front foot with Liam Sumpter forcing a fine save from Wootton keeper Joe Throp in the 8th minute. But Wootton took a shock lead in the 12th minute when confusion in the Osborne Coburg defence saw Josh Collins smash the ball past Joe Williams (1-0). Osborne Coburg then dominated the game whilst being unable to make the decisive breakthrough. Carl Phillipson came closest to equalising for the Burg with a shot across the goal line that bounced off the far post. Wootton had goalkeeper Throp to thank for reaching the half time interval with a goal advantage. In the 32nd minute, Throp made a spectacular save to deny Carl Phillipson. 4 minutes later, Throp once again came to Wootton’s rescue with a brave stop to deny an equaliser from Liam Sumpter.
Half time: AFC Wootton 1-0 Osborne Coburg The Burg continued to dominate in the second half but were unable to find an equalising goal in 20 minutes. In the 65th minute, James Green finally equalised for Osborne Coburg with a strike close to the goal line from a corner (1-1). A minute later, Nick Payne forced a further fine save from Throp. The Burg then took the lead in the 70th minute with a strike from the left side of the penalty area from Harry Green (1-2).
Wootton then had a golden opportunity to get back on level terms when awarded a controversial penalty for a foul in the 75th minute. However, after consultation with his linesman, the referee took back his decision to the fury of the Wootton team. The final chance for Osborne Coburg came 5 minutes from full time when substitute Stephen McCarthy was denied a goal by a further great save by Throp.

“It was nice to do the double in my 1st season at Coburg, and having Josh alongside me makes the job easier. but credit goes to the players who have worked hard to achieve this. “Wootton played well tonight, but overall, I felt we dominated the game over the 90 minutes and got the win we deserved.”
