DESPAIR FOR ISLANDERS AS COUNCIL TAX HIKE APPROVED ALONGSIDE YET MORE CUTS

The Isle of Wight Council will demand an extra 4.99% from households through their Council Tax bills from April, as councillors have tonight (Wednesday) approved the 2023/24 Budget which will also see parking charges increase and significant cuts made to public services.

The increase in Council Tax doesn’t end at 5% though as rises in the fire service and Police precepts, as well as some town and parish council precepts, will drive up the amount owed considerably.

For example, a Band D property in Sandown will have to pay an extra £86.46 to the Isle of Wight Council, plus an extra £72.70 to Sandown Town Council, £15 to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and £5 to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. That means a Band D property will have to find an additional £179.16 in 2023/24 when compared to 2022/23.

Article continues below this advertisement

As well as asking for more money through Council Tax, the Isle of Wight is demanding more and more of Islanders by ramping up parking charges, increasing the floating bridge fares and even charging more for cremations and burials.

From April, Isle of Wight households will have to pay the following minimum Council Tax amounts. This does not include local town/parish precepts, which depend on where you live:

  • Band A – £1,433 – up by £70.91
  • Band B – £1,671.84 – up by £82.81
  • Band C – £1,910.66 – up by £94.62
  • Band D – £2,149.50 – up by £106.46
  • Band E – £2,627.16 – up by £130.11
  • Band F – £3,104.84  – up by £153.79
  • Band G – £3,583.50 – up by £178.43
  • Band H – £4,299 – up by £212.92

The Alliance’s budget was passed with no amendments, despite efforts to keep funding for stroke social care support, a patient falls coordinator with the NHS Trust and cross-Solent patient transport funding.

The budget was passed with 21 in favour, 4 against and 11 abstentions — the majority of the opposition Conservative party.

Cabinet member for strategic finance and transformational change, Councillor Chris Jarman, said it was a survival budget for the authority, with significant cuts in many areas, having faced the turmoil in the world and the Island’s economics.

Article continues below this advertisement

He said it is a budget that none of the councillors would have wished for and one that has elements which could feel unsatisfactory to all.

Councillor Paul Fuller said it was a ‘crap budget’ which he had no pleasure to support, but councillors had to fall in line.

The people i see still buying luxury items such as alcohol, cigarettes, getting their Turkey teeth done, suggests there is still plenty of fat in the system. People sadly see these items as essential and complain they cant afford them.

How come we have so many more homes built here, ALL paying council tax, but the c.tax bill goes up each year? It ought to get lower as more money floods into their coffers.

As if they make a profit on each house, then clearly the more houses built the more income they get, so where does it all go, when all we see is ever more cutbacks?

Clearly very badly run at best.

To much is spent on those who will ensure they will never contribute to society, but always take, and instead of the unemployed, single parents, disabled, mentally sick living a slightly more basic life than workers, they all get given more, and the first two groups often choose their unemployment and ‘alleged’ single parenthood as easy lifestyle choices.

Yes exactly It can’t all be blamed on inflation as the commenter above has stated. The council is badly managed and just too many people in our society who are always on the take as pointed out by I.V Searle below.

I think you’ll find that a large part of the problem is central government slashing the Council budget to fund tax breaks for billionaires.
Maybe don’t vote Tory next time?

As has been pointed out by another comment, “Votes to cut the stroke service were all the Alliance Group independents, the 2 Green councillors, the 2 LibDems, Richard Quigley (Lab.) and John Nicholson (Con.)

Maybe don’t vote for anyone next time ‘cos it sure ain’t going to be any better under the alternatives to the Tories

I mean… inflation is 10% or more so yeah, in fact entire 4.99% can exactly be blamed on inflation, and then you still need cuts to make the same return of value as you had last year from the council tax.

What about our survival , we can’t just shout out for extra cash to cover rising costs , I wish it were that’s simple.
the average worker on the island hasn’t had a 5% pay rise some haven’t had any .
its not just 5% on council tax it 10% on this 7%on that the sums just don’t add up for householders it’s impossible now to make ends meet.
i hope they realise the implications this will have on all round expenditure to the islands economy when shops etc etc are dropping like flies we will be ghost island before long

You are absolutely correct. This household got a 3% increase. Yesterday we received a renewal for house and contents insurance and it had increased by more than 100% (no claims or changes). Disgusting.

Way to much money is wasted by allowing so called single parents to have cheap or free rent and council tax.

These parasites get thousands in child tax credits, child allowance or universal credits.

They also get free school meals, uniforms and school travel paid for.

But as their income if working just 16hr per week is ‘made up’ by tax credits or u.c then why should they get cheap or free c.tax and rent as well?

Many of them lie and live with someone to up the income and many as we know drug deal to gain even more.

They choose to have a child to gain an easy lifestyle, but at OUR expense.

Time to hit them hard as just adding more clones to ensure the next generation is even worse off.

I’m a single parent, and apart from child benefit, which everyone who is a parent gets, I get nothing. My ex Wife even refuses to pay maintenance, so I struggle. I work full time and do everything on my own. I get nothing from your imaginary list.so please shut up.

It’s not an imaginary list, it is sadly very true. However, you are an exception and I don’t think these remarks were aimed at you and people such as yourself who work hard to raise their families.

cant believe how low people stoop with their comments. I had a house with a mortgage with a partner. Unfortunately he drank more and more along with being abusive. I had to walk after he began threatening our three year old child. I was then a single parent for twelve years. Most of that time I worked but yes at times relied on top ups. Can you please explain how I was a parasite by being a single parent?
my current partner brought his two children up on his own after his partner walked after meeting someone else. He worked two jobs while bringing his kids up. He now has a life limiting condition as a result of work he did. Can you please explain the term ‘parasite’ in relation to him as a single parent!

The real parasites are the money men who stood to make a fortune from Brexit and higher energy prices. Oh, and share holders of utility companies, travel companies, etc.

shareholders of utility companies – shows you just how little you know, superman.

you do realise that the larger shareholders of a lot of companies are pension funds, which hold the cash that employees have been saving throughout their working lives for their retirements. Those investments should increase in time, to enable the employees who paid in, to get a pension that stops them from having to claim benefits in retirement.

are they parasites superman or just hard working people, saving for their retirements, through deductions from their wages as they work to fund their retirements, without sponging off the state.

the real parasites are those that never work and claim benefits from cradle to grave.

Unfortunately they’ve taken away our right to protest by withdrawing payment. Non payment of council tax bypasses the high court, and is directed instantly to the balliffs without any knowledge to the household concerned. The first anyone will know about it is a letter from the bailiffs.

Here we go again,a council run by total amateurs only interested in putting their expenses up,no concern for the rest of us.Let’s get rid of them all and have a council at least reduced by 75% with a mandate to spend our money wisely at the same time reducing the council tax by at least 25%

Councillors expenses should be reduced by 50 percent they are paid far too much for what they do, The last time this alliance lot were in charge they bottled it and failed to produce a budget they are quite frankly hopeless. When they were in charge the last time I asked my IOW councillor of St Helens I will let you all work out who that is, I asked him to propose a reduction in councillors expenses he refused. Councillors expenses.cost approx half a million pounds per year it is outrageous and the money saved would do quite a lot of good for more important things. Most of them are in it for the money.

Not true , Council tax will increase by more than 10% inflation as figures manipulated by Council by passing out to Fire, Police, Parish Councils etc . There are alot of waste in Council and how many times has ground floor at County Hall been revamped, electric car’s, heating, double glazing,Air conditioning, paid sick leave,31days paid holidays etc, whilst we all have to pay for this, even when working we don’t get full pay when sick, no paid holidays and we can’t afford an electric car or even put heating on or feed the kids etc.

What is the point of 11 abstentions? Councillors, either you agree or you don’t, yes or no. It’s quite simple.
This island will soon become a doss hole for dossers on benefits. Who will want to stay and live here. The island is slowly shutting down. Derelict hotels, high street shops all going, crime rate up. Such a shame.

I will see you all in prison then, can’t afford it, I guess all the island residents will have a special prison wing all to themselves for not being able to pay council Tax. Meanwhile the council will seize homes, all your belongings and sell them to the “entitled” Welcome to the new autocracy. Not being negative either, just saying how it is. Have you all noticed the new “fad” that if you disagree with those in charge you’re being negative. Just another way to put you down. Welcome to the Isle of Wight “Kremlin”

“I guess all the island residents will have a special prison wing all to themselves”
wing?,.. no,.. they’ll just put guards on the ferries & use the whole IOW as a prison.

(mind you, it very nearly is a prison already, with the cost of the ferries these days)

Mmmm… here’s a question. “Do Councillors get discounted ferry travel ??” if so,.. who pays for it? (retorical question btw, ..we know the answer )

They did manage to give an extra £365000. To increase the subsidy for those who only pay 35 percent of the council tax!
With so few services, what is the need for so many council staff.

So our beloved council is increasing our CT by 5%, the maximum allowed. But they are also reducing their services. Therefore they are increasing our tax by more than 5% which means they are effectively increasing it by in excess of the said 5%, contrary to the law. Would a legal eagle care to earn his salary by looking into the wording of the applicable law? Meanwhile why don’t we boycott all council car parks, the Cowes non floating disaster and anything else that goes to fill the council’s coffers. And pay your demands on the latest possible dates, no annual payments up front. You will not get your money back when they admit they are bankrupt.

It’s the good old public sector where you pay a lot more every year and get a lot less in return, but don’t complain because most of that extra cash is being used to fight that conveniently nebulous and actually impossible to measure accurately (given the billions of variables that can and do affect it) bogey man of ‘climate change’, which has been the ultimate gift for not actually delivering stuff any more for hundreds of thousands of hectoring bureaucratic non-jobbers and political grifters all over the country

We feel really let down by the IWC scrapping the stroke survivor services. Firstly although I called the ambulance which arrived in ten minutes and blue lighted my wife to St Marys, the A&E managed to mis-diagnose the stroke and sent her home a few hours later, by Monday it was obvious she was not getting better and then was admitted to the stroke unit. My wife needs 24 hour care which I give her, we have no family on the island and apart from a small attendance allowance get no other benefits, we manage on our pensions. The stroke survivors service was a lifeline of support to us. We do have a volunteers run stroke café which meets monthly in various pubs but it has no professional input.

Why are we complaining about the rise, are we being selfish in allowing over 15% of our
council tax being used for council employees pension pot? If we had no council workers at all
would there be a huge difference in what we are already getting which is nil.
