Ventnor RFC rounded off an impressive summer sevens campaign by claiming the bronze medal at the Launceston Sevens after a series of hard-fought performances in Cornwall.
Despite an early start that saw the squad catch the 04:30 Red Funnel ferry, Ventnor made an excellent start to the tournament with victories over Devon Deaf Men and Castles Are Forever.
They then produced 2 spirited displays against eventual finalists We Are One Men and Chae 7s. Ventnor led both matches until the closing stages, only for We Are One Men to snatch a late equaliser before Chae 7s scored with the final play to force another draw.
The Islanders saved one of the most dramatic contests until last in the pool stages against Jagerbombers. Trailing 4-1 at half-time, Ventnor staged a remarkable comeback to level the scores at 4-4 and stun their opponents.
Jagerbombers eventually found the decisive score in a thrilling encounter, edging the contest 6-5, but Ventnor’s performances across the day were enough to secure a well-deserved bronze medal and another podium finish.
The result caps an excellent sevens season for the Island club, which has consistently impressed on the tournament circuit throughout the summer.
