Work to demolish Sandown’s Wight City complex has finally begun this week, marking another milestone in the regeneration of the seaside town.
Contractors Ryde Demolition have moved onto the site at the junction of Fort Street and Culver Parade and have started the prep work to bring the eyesore to the ground.
Wight City was once the thriving home of Colonel Bogey’s nightclub, the Jolly Sailor pub and a seaside arcade but the complex closed at the end of 2012 and has sat derelict since.
This time last year the entire site was purchased for £1.8million and in June a fresh planning application was submitted to the Isle of Wight Council seeking approval for the erection of 47 new properties and commercial space.
It is understood the building is still full of rubbish and other materials so it will be a little while yet before the concrete comes crashing to the ground.
Ryde Demolition successfully carried out the demolition of one of Sandown’s other eyesores, The Savoy Hotel, back in 2016.
Back in November adventurous plans were revealed for Sandham Gardens, which sits adjacent to Wight City.
