The new café set to open inside Sainsbury’s in Newport will operate under the ‘Taste Café’ brand.
Island Echo previously reported that the former Sainsbury’s café, which closed in April 2025 as part of a nationwide cost-cutting programme, was preparing to reopen under a new operator.
Taste Café is a new concept operated by One Retail, part of catering giant Compass Group UK & Ireland, which is bringing café facilities back to a number of Sainsbury’s stores.
Islanders can expect a modern take on the traditional supermarket café, with the Taste concept offering breakfasts, lunches and hot meals alongside freshly baked pastries and coffee.
The brand also has a collaboration with Caffè Nero’s Aroma Coffee.
Preparations for the Newport opening are now gathering pace, with Compass recruiting a Café Manager and a number of other staff to work at the Foxes Road supermarket.
Sainsbury’s closed its own café at the Newport store on 11th April 2025, when the supermarket giant axed all 61 of its remaining cafés across the country.
At the time, Sainsbury’s told Island Echo that it was exploring future opportunities for the space.
An opening date for the new Taste Café has not yet been announced.
