A planning application for the demolition of the former Wight City complex in Sandown, and the construction of 47 residential dwellings with commercial floor space in its place, has been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council this week.
As previously reported by Island Echo, the land at Culver Parade was sold for £1.8million in January this year with outline planning permission for 47 residential apartments and a ground floor restaurant/bar, as granted by the Isle of Wight Council back in December 2014.
However, Clemens & Tanner Ltd have now submitted a fresh application for the construction of 27x 2-bed flats, 2x 3-bed flats, 5x 3-bed houses, 9x 4-bed houses and 4x 3-bed ‘duplex’. In addition, planning permission is being sought for 432 square metres of commercial floor space on the apex of the corner between Fort Street and the Esplanade, running further along the Fort Street frontage on both the ground and lower ground level.
The application requests the formation of vehicular access points onto Fort Street; parking, access roads, landscaping and bin stores for the site, which would see a 5-storey building constructed facing the sea with smaller dwellings to the rear. Enough space has been allocated for 69 cars, 125 push bikes and 4 motorcycles.
Wight City was granted planning permission back in 1970 and closed its doors for the last time at the end of 2012. Since then the site has been derelict and has fast become an eyesore in the town.
