The Environment Agency is investigating after water turned luminous green just off a public footpath in Newport earlier this week.
The unusual discolouration was spotted on Wednesday morning in the Lukely Brook, near the Wellington Road culvert and just off Public Footpath 58.
The incident was swiftly reported to the Environment Agency, with the striking colour prompting concerns among locals and dog walkers that the substance could be hazardous.
However, the Environment Agency believes the substance is drain-tracing dye and says it poses no risk to the environment.
The agency is now investigating alongside Southern Water Services to determine the source.
An Environment Agency spokesperson has said:
“We believe this is drain-tracing dye, which poses no risk to the environment.
“We are investigating the incident with Southern Water Services to determine the source.”
