Bell ringers across the Isle of Wight rang out for peace this week, with events culminating last night (Thursday) when ringers respected the national commemoration. St Saviours Tower Captain Kieran Downer led a special peel. He said:
“It was important to mark the events of 80 years ago, recognising the sacrifices made that we can enjoy the peace we have today”.
In World War II bell ringing was only allowed to warn of enemy invasion. With the ban lifted in 1943, bellringers were invited back to churches after V.E.Day in 1945. Although St Saviours’s Steeple was struck by a bomb during the war, the tower thankfully remained in tact.
