Police are responding to a road traffic collision involving at least 2 vehicles on Middle Road at Calbourne this evening (Bank Holiday Monday).
The collision has occurred on a series of bends near the water mill – a notorious accident blackspot on the Newport to Freshwater road.
It’s understood that 2 cars have collided head-on.
Island Echo readers report that the road is blocked in both directions with motorists having to turn around.
Hampshire Constabulary has sent a number of units to the scene with officers still responding West.
UPDATE @ 19:01 – No one has been seriously injured in the head-on crash, although the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is on scene.
1 fire appliance from Newport is also attending in the interests of scene safety.
The incident has involved a Fiat 500 and a Vauxhall Corsa.

This is a very dangerous stretch of road. I don’t use it very often, but when I do, I have a strong sense of danger.
Looking at the angle of the two cars, this is not QUITE a ‘head on.’ I say this because a ‘head on’ crash is the one crash you MUST avoid. Two friends of mine were involved in one. Both cars were only going at 15 mph, yet there were broken ribs involved.
It’s not a dangerous stretch of road if you stay on your side of the road . if you cross the centre line by either going to fast or not driving property then this happens to many people cut corners on this island it’s not hard just like indicating not hard
More bad driving on the IW
Might help if people stay on their own side of the road when going around corners
Get off the road if a corner frightens you. This is why it takes 24 weeks to get anywhere on this island
More bad driving on the IW
” Notorious blackspot”, “series of bends”, glad to hear no serious injuries. On these sorts of roads you must drive with all due care and attention at the correct speed or you are likely to have an ‘ accident ‘.
Bad driving
When are drivers going to learn that our Island roads need due care and attention and in particular at some well known dangerous spots. If these two cars had kept to their respective sides of the road the accident doesn’t happen.
Omg, it says slow? If your not sure slow down, that simple, I do hope no one was hurt? The cars look in a bad way? Locals know the road, but if your a tourist go slow the whole island has lots of roads with lots of bends. Stay safe it’s not the roads that are dangerous???
So what are the skid marks all about? If only doing 15mph.
Skid marks where??? Put your glasses on please
I think he can see inside the drivers pants lol glad no one hurt
Thats a spillage not skid marks and also there was no mention of 15mph, someone should have gone to specsavers, lets just hope you dont drive as well.
Spillage from impact and what appears to be a skid mark leading up to the spillage before impact. 15mph was mentioned as it is signposted SLOW before the bend therefore 15mph on such a tight bend would be a responsible speed.
There is no mention of 15mph, that was said in one of these responses. If you could put your glasses back on, and please stay OFF our roads… !!
Not dealt with many RTC’s have you, drive to the conditions and as stated before, that is not skid marks but the trail of the fluid leak after impact. Please for all our sakes stick to taking the bus.
I hope the flower pot was unharmed.
all You island drivers should have a retest every year.
Oh, and the mainland doesn’t have accidents? Grow up and stick to the mainland, the island doesn’t want you.
i am on the island
Island or islanders .you twit
It’s not your island. Its part of Great Britain.Dim wit.Go back to school all you islanders.. Uneducated idiots..
No man is an island derek
Total idiot Bob go back where you come from most accidents are caused by idiots like you
Have respect and use your common sense, firstly you don’t know where the drivers are from and secondly not ” all ” Island drivers are bad drivers, it’s the poor ones that give everyone a bad name.
Totally agree. They should stick to tractors and farm land.Out of site out of danger..
