5 people have now sadly died from coronavirus on the Isle of Wight, it has been announced.
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has confirmed that a man in his 60s, who had underlying health conditions, died at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on Sunday.
He is the 5th person to die with coronavirus COVID-19 since the pandemic reached the Island. The first death at St Mary’s was recorded on 22nd March, but was not announced until 28th March.
Alistair Flowerdew, Medical Director at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:
“Sadly, we can confirm that a man who was being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital and had tested positive for COVID-19 has died.
“The gentleman was in his 60s and had underlying health conditions.
“His family has been informed and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them at this difficult and distressing time.”
All 5 deaths on the Island have been men aged in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Official figures from Public Health England show that there are a total of 32 confirmed cases of coronavirus on the Isle of Wight as of 6th April – a number expected to increase later this afternoon (Tuesday). The total number of deaths locally now sits at 5.
As of today, 5 people admitted to St Mary’s Hospital who had tested positive for COVID-19 had recovered and been discharged.
The British Army has been brought in to help reconfigure St Mary’s Hospital to create an additional 200 beds. Meanwhile, 4 refrigerated containers have brought over to act as a temporary mortuary, should the need arise.

Very sad, as 60 doesn’t seem old nowadays.
Also worrying that once taken in odds not too brilliant if five died and five are better thus far.
Keep avoiding others ‘however’ you manage to do so, until we know most are safe again.
Terrible news. is anyone now really surprised though? Anyone coming to Ryde would find it hard to believe there was even a lockdown in place. it is as busy in my reasonably quiet area as on any other day, in fact more so now, because of the fine weather.
There are more people out and about and more cars going past than before the lockdown was in place.
What is the use of someone like me staying cooped up in here for hours on end in my small bedroom, when the rest of the world is going on as usual outside? the only difference is many shops and cafes closed, but as many people out as if nothing was going on.
I looked out of my front door just now expecting to see an empty pavement, and as soon as I glanced at the pavement a chap went past, headphones on, oblivious to anyone who may have been coming out of my gateway who would have collided with him.
If I had a garden to sit out in would be something, but i have to stay cooped up in my bedroom, it is the only room in the house where I don’t get quite so much affected by the smell of weed coming in from next door, the bathroom and elsewhere in the house is awful, as soon as i open front door to come in after being out, I can smell it, anyone coming in would think I smoked weed in here, also the chimney smoke that comes in from opposite, I feel so trapped, and don’t drive so cannot escape into the countryside. I say this in case anyone thinks I have a garden and space I can happily stay at home in, I don’t have that luxury, but try to keep to the lockdown for fear of contacting anything and because I am trying to do the right thing. It feels I am totally alone, not just in the isolation but in every other respect as well. The scummy people around me in the area all have their vast families and support network of like-minded scummy friends, all the same types as they are.
You are not as alone as you think. I live in a busy thoroughfare and in the last few days have seen and heard the world and his wife/her husband, every man/woman and his/her dog, more bike families with squeaky brakes than I knew existed. And of course, people must still chat and this CV crisis is a ready feast for conversation (keeping a double bed apart of course), even though the dogs can continue to sniff. Oh yes and the weed is everywhere, even in the nicest places. Smelt a lovely bonfire as the sun was coming down last night also just to put a nice touch to the evening. With the power tools and boy racer exhausts, Ryde is once again coming to life again, roll on the summer. Keep safe.
Ryde has got so rough now. In fact it’s been getting worse for years.
Thank you. I waited until practically dark yesterday before a walk round the block, but it was an endurance test in trying to avoid people. One bloke with a lit cigarette sticking out of his mouth, nearly collided with me when he came sharp round a corner, I was just able to move out of the way in time,
Then a family of three coming towards me, and I suppose they would be termed quite obese, taking up all the room on the pavement, making no attempt to move aside to allow me to pass by, they didn’t even try to walk in single file to make a bit more space, they just kept coming at me, and luckily there was no traffic at that time so I was able to cross to other side and had to walk where there was no pavement. The lowlife family then started making sneering comments and laughing at me because they saw me have to limp across the road to avoid them walking into me, the man started coughing loudly and they thought this was hilarious. I felt so intimidated, there is no respect for a lady a bit frail and alone and getting on a bit it seems by those types of people.
Sad times but hardly surprising as Newport is like a normal shopping day last few days
Why CANT WE BE TOLD WHERE THEY LIVE WE TOKD NIT TO GO OUT SO TELL US WHERE TO KERP AWAY FROM
If u were told one from Newport one from cowes one from sandown/shanklin one from freshwater or one from no mans fort does it matter u should stay vigilante all the same as where ever they may have lived etc they may have passed someone from across the island
2 care homes in totland
R.I.P
So much for the ‘lock down’. Here in Ventnor everyone is out and about as normal, including myself but I am working. No police presence now whatsoever. Was quiet for a week or two but now I guess no one cares.
Why is there such a delay from the sad passing, to releasing the information? I understand the family should know first, but we are allegedly in a pandemic
RIP and my deepest condolences to the family at this terrible time.
