More than 18 months has passed since Island Echo first enquired and over 4 months since the story was exclusively reported, but finally supermarket giant Aldi have confirmed their plans to open a second store on the Island on land at Spithead Business Centre in Lake.
Island Echo got in touch with Aldi back in November 2013 amid rumours of the development of the supermarket giant’s second store on the Isle of Wight, but the chain have been reluctant to shed any light on the potential for a new store – until now.
A newsletter has been distributed to nearby residents and a website set up to inform locals of the plans, which will see a new 1,140m² food store built with a total of 97 car parking spaces and the creation of up to 40 full and part-time jobs with a minimum employment contract of 25 hours a week.
The modern store is set to be built on empty land at Spithead Business Centre off Whitecross Lane, opposite the recently developed Merrie Gardens pub. The area of Merrie Gardens is one on the up, with an expansion due for Morrisons and planning permission granted for a brand new Premier Inn hotel.
Aldi say the new store would provide local residents in Lake with the chance to easily access deeply discounted, high-quality products and that the range and price of goods sold in-store would provide shoppers with the opportunity to use Aldi in addition to smaller, local businesses in the area.
The first Aldi store on the Island was opended in Cowes back in September 2013.
