A team of over 40 volunteers helped transform the garden of Ryde’s Easthill Home for Deaf People over the weekend (8th June). Those who came out to help, worked tirelessly all day, painting, weeding and planting. Those who helped were even cheered on by the weekend sunshine. The local community has rallied to help the charity, with businesses and individuals generously donating materials to support the project. The project has already received over £6,000 in donations, with more in-kind donations coming in. The initiative was started by the family and friends of residents, Karen Baitup and Amanda Casson-Webb. Volunteer Karen Baitup said:
“My mum has dementia and has been living at Easthill for 2 years. The staff are so kind and caring, and when you see all the staff and residents signing together, you realise it’s a special place. We wanted to give something back to say thanks and knew that the garden was the perfect project.”
A spokesperson for Deaf Action UK has said:
“A heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteers who generously gave their time and energy to make this project a reality. We couldn’t have done it without you and thank you to the many organisations who supported us with donations of plants, tools, refreshments, discounted travel, accommodation, and their invaluable time.”
