VIDEO: A section of cliff at Yaverland near Sandown is still falling this evening (Sunday) following this morning’s landslide, with fears more sections could soon collapse.
As previously reported by Island Echo, emergency services launched a search and rescue operation following the landslide at around 10:30 this morning. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.
Although high tide has washed away a small amount of the debris, thousands of tonnes of rock and soil remains on the beach between Yaverland and Culver Cliff, which prevents passage at high tide.
HM Coastguard have used the safety of low tide this evening to get a closer look at the cliff face, where it is evident that further sections could collapse with large cracks and voids present.
Members of the public are being urged to keep their distance and to be aware of further possible cliff falls in the area. The Isle of Wight Council have erected signs.
The cliff top path – which runs from Yaverland Car Park to Culver Down – remains open as normal.
