Streets were filled with a wave of clapping, cheering and car horns once again last night (Thursday) as the Island came together to clap for our carers for the 4th week running.
The enthusiasm behind recognising NHS and social care staff shows no signs of slowing down as households paused the TV, put down their phones and took to the doorstep to show appreciation for the work of carers up and down the country.
Officers from Hampshire Constabulary joined firefighters from Newport’s Green Watch in gathering outside St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, where staff members ventured outside to see the support given. In a twist to proceedings, the nurses, doctors and support staff gave their own clap to the key workers to say thank you for the work that they do.
WATCH: Clap for our Carers outside St Mary’s Hospital
Meanwhile, crews at Newport Fire Station have erected a motif on the station’s drill tower showing their support for the NHS. Over in Ryde, a ‘Rainbow of Hope’ has been placed on top of the town’s station’s drill tower for all key workers.
Each Thursday, Island Roads are changing the VMS signs around Newport to show their appreciation with the message ‘Thank U Carers’, featuring a large red heart.

They are doing a fantastic job no doubt but take note people this is how NOT to social distance.
They work together you moron.
Oh sorry I didn’t realise that made them immune, my mistake
Social distancing??right or wrong???
Really great to read of all the support for all those who are risking their, and their families safety working in such risky places.
We all know the worry just getting our shopping, then the fuss of having to disinfect the bags, the items purchased the car door handles, keys, and trying to think of everything you, or the shop workers have touched.
A massive worry, can’t imagine how fraught it is in hospitals, care homes, and all the other people working in jobs we don’t instantly ‘see’ as being risky, but really are.
We can only wish them all luck to stay healthy and show our gratitude for the known hero’s along with the millions of those who are never going to be recognised but are doing the same in other walks of life.
Nice to see them all 2 meters apart! Well done great example!
To all the pointless commenters about social distancing. They work with and around each other all the time and probably class as a ‘family group’. I just hope none of you need their help as quite frankly, you don’t deserve it.
Can’t remember last time I saw dyno rod in the wards!! Shut up! Get real!
Our heros came at 0700 this morning.
The bin men. They are still working hard for us all.
I have enormous respect for the NHS staff but is it really necessary for the police, fire service and others to go up to the hospital.
Surely if you really do appreciate and respect the incredibly hard work and brave NHS staff, you would clap from your own places of work and not make the non-essential trip to the hospital.
How can the police demand respect and cooperation when they them self’s are ignoring the government advice and breaking the law!! With nonessential travel
Well said!!
There are so many who are going above and beyond their normal work definition. Please lets include our Bus Drivers for example, who are keeping essential routes open for NHS, community carers, Care Home staff, shop staff, and anyone else who cannot get to a shop, doctor and so on by any other means. They cannot move to keep their 2metres distance when someone boards the bus and pays their fare, asks a question etc. There is a lot of talk about using the middle door not the door opposite the driver………………anyone seen a bus like that over here? So when we clap for NHS and carers, ;lets also think of these other amazing people.
There must be so,so many others that we simply take for granted in our everyday lives..the cheerful trolley-boys, the posties, the news boys and girls, our food-deliverers,couriers,so many still trying to give us a little sense of normality in the midst of chaos.
When the time comes for accolades and awards then surely the inanity of celebrity and reality tv shows and over-hyped sports “personalities” must take a great big back seat,if they need to exist at all.
Awards truly belong to those deserving in situations that are beyond the normal human endurance yet are somehow overcome by the few; they are SPECIAL….which means beyond the usual.
They are now so very obvious….the amazingly wonderful Thomas Moore….The Unique NHS..EVERY SINGLE ONE of them, coping and carrying on with or without a mask or whatever is available to them..every single CARER in a Nursing Home or privately at home….EVERY CLEANER ensuring all is sterile….there are so,so many to add on.
We simply MUST help in every possible way we can,the simplest being in keeping away from any risk by being indoors and knowing that EVERY SINGLE DAY we do so is helping not only ourselves stay safer a bit longer but also relieving pressure on our wonderful NHS.
EVERY TIME we go out then we are looking ahead at the least next 14 days or more wondering if we might have caught it….think on that…….and who else have we risked?
Youngsters today might complain of being “bored” in the lock down….they have no idea, have they?? Internet, dvds, cds,Facebook,Snapchat,Twitter,YouTube…and so the list goes on ad infinitum……..
How wonderful to have the chance to be a part of a family in the true sense of the word again….jigsaws, games, exercising together in laughter, music discovered….
Bored?? maybe now their parents will finally be able to shake them from their apathy in great frustration at such meaningless existence; if nothing else this could be a great big wake-up call for many youths who have become complacent with empty lives beyond the screens they idolise!
I fear there are yet more trying times ahead but we can be resilient if we truly do the right thing above all else….stick to the rules,do the wise thing. What in the World is 6 months holding back against the rest of your life if you are young and have years ahead of you…..and if you are older then EVERY year is a joy and a blessing thankful for even before all this ever happened.
BE SAFE…STAY WELL…KEEP YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU and don’t start becoming complacent if the days go by without too many events; this is an insidious and unrelenting virus and will attack anyone at all unawares.
I am a Northern Lass originally but the Isle of Wight has become my adoration for the past 58 years….and my strength as a Northerner merges with my absolute love of this beautiful place.
We WILL fight and overcome this ……we will!
Very well said, thank you.
Social distancing for the key workers and carers is near impossible, how do a group of fire fighters sit 2m apart? Take different appliances to a call? The nurses, use a 2m spoon to give medicine? They can try as much as possible to social distance but they put their lives at risk to selflessly perform their duties for all of OUR benefit.
THANK YOU ALL!
I would like to see people clapping for all the local shops and the people who staff them. They put their selves at personal risk every day serving people & coming into distant contact with the public. The Village shop in Brighstone is fantastic, doing next day deliveries at no charge, and sending quality products. I hope people will remember this & continue to use the shop & the newsagents when this is all over.
bit like the wars. plenny went, all was called brave, many waz, but like now, they dunt have no choice niever. if you wants to eat neckt week then you goes to work.
not takin nowt away from such workers, but thatll be the size of it.
all they at home bredin and getin free ous an all is the wrong uns. need my casteration pliers.
We are not heroes we are just doing our jobs, but I appreciate the thought. Thank you
The prison service are also key workers.
