Homes and businesses in and around Yarmouth are without water this afternoon (Monday).
A burst water main in the area of Wilmingham Lane/Thorley Road is to blame for the lack of supply, which has been affecting locals for at least 2 hours.
The incident was recorded at just gone 15:00 and it is expected to be sometime before supplies are restored to all affected customers.
You may notice some discolouration or low pressure; this is completely normal when there’s been a disruption to the supply and is only temporary.
Southern Water apologises for any inconvenience caused.
UPDATE – A spokesperson for Southern Water has said:
“We’re currently repairing a burst water main at Wilmingham Lane, Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight which is affecting water supplies to homes.
“Digging through difficult terrain has delayed this emergency work but we will complete repairs as quickly and as safely as possible.
“Bottled water is being delivered to vulnerable customers.
”We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused and will update again on our channels this evening”.
UPDATE @ 22:45 – Yarmouth residents are expected to be without water for several more hours, with repair works set to carry on into the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Bottled water is being made available on Bridge Road opposite the Wightlink terminal. Deliveries to vulnerable individuals are also being made.
Southern Water says there is a ‘complexity’ to the fix, which has led to Wilmingham Lane/Thorley Road being closed in both directions to assist with the repair works.
Southen Vectis buses are now on diversion as a result of the road closure and are unable to serve Wellow and Thorley. Buses will divert from Station Road to Ningwood, Cranmore and Yarmouth to resume normal route.
UPDATE TUESDAY @ 07:30 – Repairs to the burst water main at Wilmingham Lane were completed earlier this morning and supplies have returned to all properties.
Some households may notice discolouration to their water when they first run their taps but this is perfectly normal – let your water run for a moment until clear.
Wilmingham Lane temporarily remains closed while reinstatement works are complete.

Do you have any idea whether it’s fixed before tomorrow morning?
Was finally fixed about 1.30am
Still no water here at gone 7pm. Not great to not even be able to wash hands, etc. during COVID. Not to mention cook.
Would be nice to get a report on the chlorine levels in the water, and correlate data to the area and see how many people are getting cancer.
O Giles shocking news
I rang Southern Water and was told they had mended one leak and then found there was another.
The website says the next update will be at 23.27.
If your worried about chlorine fill a bucket or something with water and leave it to let the chlorine escape into the air it takes 24hrs or boil it for 15 mins.
Chloramine different it won’t disperse to the air boil it for 10 hours, it causes gastric cancer.
Quote: “Digging through difficult terrain has delayed this emergency work but we will complete repairs as quickly and as safely as possible.” Unquote.
What a load of old cobblers. What they probably mean is that they are not sure where the leak is and, anyway, most of the workforce is self-isolating, we can’t charge our van because of a power cut and our head dowser has lost his divining rod.
The truth is that both the electric grid and the water grid are facing catastrophic failure due to lack of investment in the infrastructure caused by the greed of the shareholders who want to maximize short term profits over all else.
