Island Echo readers are now able to receive push notifications about breaking news directly to their mobile or desktop device through Facebook Messenger!
When a story of significant interest breaks on the Isle of Wight, Island Echo has the ability to notify readers straight away through a special push notification – without the need for readers to download a new app. All you have to do to subscribe to this FREE service is message the Island Echo Facebook Page and tap ‘Get Started’.
As well as receiving breaking news, readers can sign up to a weekly newsletter which will highlight the most interesting or quirky stories of the week. That’s not all… by hitting the ‘Get the latest news’ button readers are delivered the top 3 stories as easily as if a friend was sending a chat.
Millions of people already use Facebook Messenger on a daily basis so this is a solid base in which to host the brand new notification system. No other Island news source is using Facebook Messenger in this way which makes it unique to Island Echo.
The exciting new feature has been a joint venture between the Island’s news source and local development company, Solent Create. It follows on from the success of the Google Home and Amazon Alexa news service that was launched on the Isle of Wight at the end of 2017.
Darren Toogood, Editor and Publisher of Island Echo has said:
“This is yet another first for the Isle of Wight delivered by Island Echo. We are proud to be leading the way when it comes to Isle of Wight news, using new technology and ideas to shape the future of news reporting on the Island as we have done for the past 6 years.
“The ability to send push notifications to thousands of Islanders at the same time will no doubt prove vital in instances of missing people and serious incidents. We won’t be using this feature on a daily basis or sending promotional material so when you get a notification you know it will be of importance”.
Adam Rann of Solent Create adds:
“People are now using closed, proprietary platforms more than ever for communication, sharing and media and this offers a great opportunity for businesses – who can appear alongside friends and families in a user’s inbox. Further to this, an emphasis of publishers pushing content to users rather than users searching for information themselves, has been emerging for a few years.
“Facebook Messenger is an excellent choice for Island Echo, building upon it’s existing Facebook following and adding to its content distribution on Amazon Alexa and on the Google Assistant”.
