Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts have been called to Shanklin to investigate the discovery of an object that is suspected to be an explosive.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth are expected to arrive on the Esplanade later this afternoon (Wednesday).
Coastguards from Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are currently on scene at the southern end of the Esplanade.
A safety cordon has been established until the object can be safely inspected and, if required, destroyed.
UPDATE @ 15:28 – Bomb Disposal have arrived at Shanklin and are carrying out a survey of the object to determine whether or not it needs to be disposed of by means of a controlled explosion.
UPDATE – The device has been successfully destroyed by means of a controlled explosion.
It has been confirmed that the object was an anti-invasion mine, dating back to the war years.
if it is an explosive device perhaps they could kill 2 birds with one stone and transport it to East Cowes then after placing it on the non floating bridge detonate it and do us all a favour, they could sink it in the yacht squadrons private marina.
The things we do to prevent illegal immigration.
