Beryl’s stint on the Isle of Wight is coming to an end, with the firm’s teal-coloured e-scooters and e-bikes to be removed from the streets by the end of the week – to be replaced by Voi. The contract to operate the scheme on the Isle of Wight – and in both Portsmouth and Southampton – is ending following what has been described as an ‘open tender process’. Since launching in November 2020, it’s thought around 150,000 journeys have been made on e-scooters on the Isle of Wight. It was 18 months ago that a similar scheme was launched for e-bikes, but that has proven less popular with only around 10,000 journeys completed to date. In recent times e-scooters have been available in Newport, Ryde, Wootton, East Cowes and Cowes respectively, although in September 2022 some 32 bays were removed. Previously, e-scooters were also for hire in Sandown, Lake and Shanklin but Beryl withdrew from The Bay prior to the month of March – with no explanation given. Beryl’s scooters and bikes will still be available to hire until midnight on Sunday (30th June), but they will start to be removed from the streets this week. All outstanding balances and remaining minutes will be automatically refunded to customers.

Fantastic news, no more idiots using them..
A new company has got the contract so e scooters will still available for rental
You realise that Voi are also electric scooters?
If you read it they are not going for good another company going to take over so you’ll still.ll get some idiots
What a wonderful idea
Sounds like a tax dodge?
If ever a headline delivered false hope this is it.
“to be replaced by”…sigh
I thought they were gone for good, but just changing colour.
If its ‘sustainable ‘ and green you get away with murder and no road traffic regulations.
And how many accidents ?? Where’s that statistic ? These things are death traps when used in this wrong hands .. the IWC don’t care about that .. we need a robust law so the law breakers face justice .
Cars are death traps in the wrong hands? Ie drug and drink drivers
Cars are indeed death traps in the wrong hands…however most stay on the roads and create some level of noise.
The e scooters are often used on pavements and are also very quiet. That is where the danger lies.
The statistics are available online, 0.02% of rides had reported accidents. There have been no fatal or severe injuries reported at all
Beryl’s will probably end up as land fill – so green!
All those rare earth metals dug out but child labourers by hand in toxic dust for a few pennies a day.
How are batteries bring recycled?….oh really you can’t?
Time they were all given a watery grave in the medina…….. just saying.
Absolute waste of space and a danger to other road users. No experience required, The company operating these things should be made to deposit a very large non refundable deposit to ensure everyone harmed by these things is swiftly compensated.
None of them wear safety helmets.
Unless the hire company provides them why should they, the chances that a casual user would have a helmet with them would be very slim to nil!
Why would that be necessary? They are all fully insured therefore anybody harmed by their negligence can already claim compensation.
Absolute rubbish. They have no identification on them so no way of proving if one had an accident unless you were lucky enough to be filming it at the time. Also, no way to prove who was using it at the time as these things are often “shared” by the ones who hire them.
They do have ID
They have an identification number, the user or whoever unlocked it has a registered license with their account and the scooters have a permanent gps tracker on them. You are making things up because it’s always feels over reals for you lot.
Under the Beryl system a valid driving licence is required to hire a scooter, I know because I have the app and I’ve hired from them before.
Crush the Fcukers.
They are used illegally, if I had a pound everytime I see
one scooting down the wrong side of the road
I would be rich
Ten Pounds is a lot to some !
How many times have you seen a scooter rider make an illegal move exactly?
Legalise them, driving licence, insurance + compulsory crash hat…Perhaps then we won’t see reckless riders..
Yeah, they’ve got the time and resources to do that when they’re racking it in from motorists and yet still there are 3 million drivers on the road WITHOUT insurance – good luck!
It’s always puzzled me why these electric scooters are deliberately parked near schools to entice kids to use them when they require a driving licence. Yes, a few will have passed their test but the vast majority haven’t, and yet they can still apparently use them.
You don’t need to pass any test to use one. You just need a valid driving licence.
Damn, for a minute I thought they were going forever!
As a responsible user who is mobility impaired these have been a much appreciated form of transport. It’s a shame that the minority of idiots have given them such a bad reputation.
Well said it is usually a case of a few idiots spoiling something which could be a great benefit to some other users
You raise our hopes with one statement then dash them with the next, when comprising the statistics why are there no accident or criminal actions incorporated in them. Children have been seen on them I had one dumped outside my house and other children were trying to ride it (naturally). I had to phone the company to report it and it got picked up 2 days later. Ban the bloody things.
Just different colour ones to be discarded everywhere then… YAY!
We want more so good going along the seafront and around town
No one use’s them just thrown to the ground..give it up..
They are dangerous things driven by underage teenagers. I’ve recently seen an a women with her 2 kids standing behind her.
A step in the right direction. The users have very little common sense, the scooters are a danger to pedestrians and the things are are fire hazard. Ban them, its just another stupid gimmick by climate change and just stop oil activist.
