Beryl has announced that it is removing 32 of its e-Scooter parking bays on the Island.
As part of a Government-approved trial, Beryl was launched on the Isle of Wight at the end of 2020. The scheme began in Newport and expanded to Ryde just before Christmas 2021 before then branching out to East Cowes, Cowes, Sandown and Shanklin.
The company has this week announced that almost 2 years into the trial, some 32 bays are being removed in Newport, Ryde, East Cowes and Cowes.
It’s said that the removal of the bays is in preparation for ‘something very exciting’ with ‘big news coming soon’. It’s unclear at this stage if this relates to the anticipated legalisation of e-Scooters by the Government.
The following bays will be removed:
Cowes
- Medina Road
- Egypt Hill
- Reynolds Close
- Broadfields Avenue
- Portland Inn
- Church Road
- Wyatts Lane
East Cowes
- Victoria Grove/Beatrice Avenue
- Adelaide Grove/Hospital Road
- Minerva Road
- Hefford Road
Newport
- Recreation Ground Road
- Carisbrooke High Street
- Shide Road
- Hookes Way
- Sycamore Gardens
- Sea Street
- Isle of Wight Council
- Mill Street
- St John’s Place
Ryde
- Ryde Pier Head
- Chapel Road
- Binstead Hill
- Treefields
- Upton Road/Colenutts Road
- West Street
- Hill Street
- Dover Street
- The Duck
- Arundel Close
- Old Seaview Lane
- Nettlestone Green
Beryl e-Scooters are capped at a top speed of 12.5mph and in adherence with the law are only allowed on the road, not on pavements. ‘Out of zone’ technology is being utilised which means when a scooter exits a pre-defined zone it will gradually drop to just 3mph. Riders will receive a notification via the Beryl App where they can check the scheme parameters.

Good riddance .. the drunks taxi’s will not be missed … at least the pavements, roads will be a little bit safer now .. and another failed IWC initiative.. just surprised our Globe Trotting MP never had a photoshoot with a scooter .. your PR team missed a chance there.
No, they are just making room for their new ebikes instead, which will be just as much of a nuisance as the scooters are.
If that’s the case then so be it, as certain cyclists on the island hardly respect/ understanding for pedestrians and road users .. so no progress made … perhaps another short sighted decision by IWC .. no consultation period
Great, bikes to litter up the pavement instead, hardly exciting announcement! They won’t appeal to the little angel that ride the scooters ,the scooters have been mainly misused , bikes won’t be popular.
Sorry the Beryl has been shooting up the “road” on the pavement. There should be more control over speed and monitoring of where they are being used. Bad enough when they are on the road but even worse when on pavements.
Beryl do absolutely nothing when you report incidents, we have the things being ridden on the pavements and two people on one scooter, they ignore one way rules and abuse people if challenged.
About time. Riding on pavements and wrong way down oneway streets, mind you they are not the only ones that do this.
you are right, cyclists seem to have taken over the pavements on Ryde Esplanade and the riders, of all ages, are just as abusive but the police do nothing despite riding o a pavement being illegal
Something I do not understand I always got told not to ride on pavements.. so I not sort this issue out first that has been going for a lot longer.. and not just that you cannot walk down a payment anymore as you have cars parked on them and you cannot walk. So why not sort out the cars and bikes on pavements first or is this too difficult to do
E-scooters are a great way to get around cheaply, unfortunately it is the minority that ruin it for everyone, kids riding them around when they clearly don’t have a driving licence or on their own scooters riding on pavements which is ultimately illegal, again this is probably seen as trivial by the police as with theft so nothing will ever get done about it, there should be a drive in place where if you are caught on the road or pavement without some basic insurance which will hopefully be needed when legalised then your scoot is permanently confiscated
Not that cheap & lethal!
not as lethal as the amount of car accidents on the island
Damn things should be banned.
Just promote idleness, should be banned on that alone.
Hope they actally do make having your own legal. Grate fun.
Yes very grating they are
totally great fun , plenty of complaints from those that are ignorantly polluting our air we breath
Not on the list but just seen a guy collecting them up on Great Preston Road……
Let’s hope he’s taking them to the Tip.
Hope the news is that they are stopping the trial and going. Nothing but a nuisance both on the road and pavements.
I want to see DfT stop the trials and not make scooters street legal. Beryl have successfully proven that scooters are a damn nuisance to pedestrians and motorists and that there is no way of enforcing their use effectively on Island roads. Not what they were hoping to prove though, was it.
Why were the Beryl scooter bays on the pavements in the first place the . Scooters are not allowed on the pavements please put the scooter bay on the road and not obstruct the footpaths to encourage a more people use the footpaths. Which I understand the local council wants to encourage?
Considering the problems and injuries caused by illegal use of e scooters. Only good news, will be banning them. Just a danger to pedestrians and road users.
Crush them all. Awful things.
Perhaps another Twizy style scam’s heading this way. Receive a £36,000 start up, then a months later close it down and keep the money..
That big news wont be the good news were hoping for sadly.
Quite probly an expansion of the damn things in different areas with the council seeking to make their use mandatory.
Hope I’m wrong.
These Scooters are an Health and safety Hazard.
They should be taken to the skip and disposed of.
Who is liable when a scooterist causes damage, they scoot around like morons.
The scooter riders insurance
What if they don’t have insurance ?
I have seen many clowns on them who I would imagine
do not understand the meaning of the word “insurance”
These Scooters are an Health and safety Hazard.
They should be taken to the skip and disposed of.
Who is liable when a scooterist causes damage, they scoot around like morons
How come so many kids are riding them still,
Heard rumour that council, will replace all of their pool cars with scooters.
One word suffices ‘GOOD’!
drug dealers and their runners rubbing their hands
I suspect the ‘great’ news will be just another stupidity
Clifftongrade would look after them very well.
That’s a start.how about removing them all just dumped in random places, for kids to jump on and misuse
Beryl the Peril !!!
Are they going to be legal in the dark with no lights?
Awwwww I going misss them!!! stoned while rideing just drug drive now
Ur such a loser
I have never read such a load of ill informed twaddle, written by the stupid, as above.
Should let the scooters continue and all the comments on here saying not good should shut up and get on with life
Smoke weed every day
Hopefully the upgrade will bring E bikes and get some of these dangerous car drivers of the roads and they are dangerous cars drivers with the amount of accidents on the island , fat lazy people enjoy complaining about e scooter or ebikes and bicycles as to improving there own health and wellbeing , if anything the cars are a nuisance and danger to a small island along with the pollution they produce , looking forwards to the positive upgrade
Yes it is ebikes that are coming. If I understand what the Beryl guy said correctly they will be tethered to bay hardware so not able to be left out of the bay and that is why the smaller bays are being removed as they will not fit in them.
