More than 600 residents in the village of Bembridge have voted against the Parish Council’s plans to sell off property in the High Street – although the vote isn’t legally binding.
A total of 833 people turned out to vote for or against the controversial plans yesterday (Thurssay), which is more than the amount of people who turned out for the General Election locally.
Councillors have already agreed to sell off 5-7 High Street which would see the loss of offices and local businesses. The decision has created a real rift in the village and is certainly a strong talking point for those further afield too.
Back in May it was agreed that a poll should be held to grasp the thoughts of Bembridge residents on a wide scale and although not a legally binding vote, the results have shown a resounding defeat for the Parish Council with 602 votes against the plans and just 231 votes for.
Locals now await to see if the Parish Council will listen to the residents of Bembridge in a democratic way and halt their plans for the sale of the buildings. The vote will be discussed on Tuesday (3rd July).
