Hampshire Constabulary has launched an appeal for witnesses after an 86-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a road traffic collision yesterday afternoon (Thursday).
As first reported by Island Echo, emergency services attended the incident on Culver Parade – near to The Bandstand restaurant – at around 12:30.
2 passengers on board the Southern Vectis owned community transport bus were injured and taken to hospital – including an 81-year-old woman had minor injuries and was later discharged, and an 86-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital.
Were you in the area at the time? Perhaps you saw the blue bus in the run-up to the incident or maybe you have dash-cam footage?

I’m assuming the 86 year old lady was a passenger on the bus, however, I’ve never understud why buses don’t have seat belts??.
Does anyone have any answer to this? because there’s a lot of objects to hit in an emergency braking situation…
Since 1 October 2001, seat belts have been required to be installed in each forward and rearward facing seat in all new buses. The use of an approved and properly fitted restraint system can help prevent death or serious injury, not only by restraining the occupant from forward motion but also by preventing their ejection from the vehicle, particularly in accidents where the vehicle rolls over.
The only exemption from this requirement is for buses that are designed for urban use with standing passengers. An exemption is permitted for these vehicles because they are typically used for short journeys, in both time and distance, undertaken at moderate speeds on urban routes. Although we are aware that vehicles equipped with seat belts are used by some operators for urban fare paying services, ultimately, it is for the operator to choose the type of vehicle used to provide a service.
I thought exactly the same
“I’ve never understood why buses don’t have seat belts??”
Because business does not want them.
I remember the old number 3 route that used to go from Newport through Havenstreet to Ryde. I recall the interior upholstery being blue patterned and there were seatbelts throughout the whole bus. I think I was the only one who ever used one though and sometimes had to struggle to undo it when the bus reached my stop and I had to get off. I think the buses, whether single or double decker, were dark blue on the exterior, so may have been different buses to the ones regularly used. I used to love that route and always preferred that over the current 9 routes from Newport to Ryde, which bypasses Havenstreet altogether, such a shame.
