The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (IWFRS) has issued some simple advice for Island homeowners to follow as a result of a spike in the number of chimney fires in recent months.
Fire crews have been called out to properties across the Island on many occasions due to the lack of simple maintenance.
What to do if you have a chimney fire
1. Call the fire brigade – 999 Chimneys should be swept:
2. Leave the room, close the door and make sure everyone in in the property knows there is a fire.
3. If it’s a log burner or stove close the vents and flue dampers if possible, to restrict the oxygen feeding the fire.
4. Get outside through the quickest and easiest escape route.
5. Stay out until the fire and rescue service arrive.
• at least once a year when using smokeless fuels
• at least once a year when using bituminous coal
• every 3 months when using wood
• once a year when using oil
• once a year when using gas
Always call the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for a chimney fire – it has the ability to destroy your home.
