A poll of more than 5,000 Island Echo readers – the largest such poll held on the Isle of Wight – has shown that the majority WILL download the NHS contact tracing app when it goes live from tomorrow (Thursday).
75% of those who responded to the Facebook poll said they would download the app. A total of 5,500 people voted, with just 25% going against supporting the community by saying they won’t download the mobile phone application.
As previously reported, Islanders are being encouraged to support the nation by being part of the next phase of the Government’s Test & Trace Programme by downloading a brand new contact tracing app.
Every household on the Isle of Wight will receive a letter over the next week explaining further details about the app and how to download it. Letters will be sent out between Thursday and Monday. In addition, advertisements will be visible across the Island Echo website prompting readers to take part in the trial.
The app has already gone live for NHS and Council staff, who were invited to download it from 16:00 yesterday afternoon. However, many other Islanders have been ‘leaked’ the URL and have downloaded the app already. This isn’t bad news though as it is hoped as many locals as possible will download the mobile app with an ideal target of 50% of the population – around 70,000 people.
FAQs
Will the lockdown restrictions be lifted on the Island earlier than elsewhere?
No. The Isle of Wight continues to follow the national guidelines on lockdown and social distancing. The Prime Minister is due to provide an update on the restrictions on Sunday.
What about older residents on the Isle of Wight who don’t have a smartphone?
Not everyone owns a smartphone, but support will be in place for those that do to enable them to successfully download the contact tracing app. This will be delivered through existing groups and helpline, as well as on a dedicated website. For those without a smartphone, they will not be able to use the app but will still benefit from others downloading and using it within society.
The app is aimed at those who are out and about in the community, coming into contact with others.
Mobile phone signal in my area is very poor, will this have an adverse effect on the app?
No. The app uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with other devices and is therefore not reliant on having a mobile or WiFi signal. When a user is submitting data to the NHS then a communications signal is required.
How long am I expected to use the app for?
Islanders are being asked to download the app and continue to use it for the duration of the pandemic. There is no specific trial period. It is hoped the Isle of Wight will be a vanguard for the nation.
Will the app drain my phone’s battery?
NHSX say that the app using low-energy Bluetooth and therefore should not drain the user’s mobile phone battery.
Who can download the app?
Anyone can download the app once it goes live. However, the data upload will only work for those living on the Isle of Wight. Mainland residents are being urged to keep the app if they do download it and they will be notified when it becomes available in their area. Only those with an Isle of Wight address will be able to book a swab test.
Islanders are reminded to download the app on their mobile phone – not on an iPad, laptop or desktop device. The URL contained within the letter should be typed into a mobile phone browser.
I work in a clinical environment, will this affect my app’s performance?
Medical workers using the app will be asked to turn off their Bluetooth when they put on their PPE. Look out for a specific page of information within the app itself.
Can the app be misused?
Unfortunately, malicious users cannot be prevented entirely. Experts have worked on the wording of the app to encourage positive use.
I use an iPhone – will this communicate with Android devices?
Yes. Apple phones will communicate with Android devices – something historically unheard of.

Apparently the app is not available to those under 16, if it is totally anonymous how will this be monitored, and why no under 16 if there are no privacy issues.

The new NHS coronavirus app will have “unintended consequences”, according to the head of the unit developing it.
Officials do not know “exactly how it will work”, Matthew Gould, chief executive of NHSX, told a parliamentary committee.
“There will be unintended consequences, there will for sure be some things we have to evolve,” he said.
and
Privacy campaigners have raised concern over the potential for “mission creep” with the data that will be gathered on people’s movements and contact with others.
The Health Service Journal reported that it has not yet passed tests on cyber security, performance and clinical safety needed to be included in the NHS app library.
data is not your own on this app….

UK COVID-19 contact-tracing app data may be kept for ‘research’ after crisis ends, MPs told
Want to opt out of that part? No chance, says NHSX chief
Britons will not be able to ask NHS admins to delete their COVID-19 contact-tracking data from government servers, digital arm NHSX’s chief exec Matthew Gould admitted to MPs this afternoon.
Gould also told Parliament’s Human Rights Committee that data harvested from Britons through NHSX’s COVID-19 contact tracing app would be “pseudonymised” – and appeared to leave the door open for that data to be sold on for “research”.
In response to questions from Scottish Nationalist MP Joanna Cherry this afternoon, Gould told MPs: “The data can be deleted for as long as it’s on your own device. Once uploaded all the data will be deleted or fully anonymised with the law, so it can be used for research purposes.”
De-anonymising such data was successfully demonstrated in 2015, as we reported at the time.
Although Gould said the NHSX app would auto-delete contact data that isn’t uploaded to government servers, he did explain:
If data has been shared by choice with the NHS, then it can be retained for research in the public interest or by the NHS for planning and delivering services, obviously in line with the law and on the basis of the necessary approvals by law.
obviously in line with the law and on the basis of the necessary approvals by law.
in other words – if existing laws don’t allow us to do what we want – we will make or change the law so we can do what we want.
Never mind the human rights.
‘A poll’. Really?
And exactly what poll was that? I never saw such a poll so cannot be counted as either one of the 75% or 25%.
It was a facebook poll, which not everyone uses.
75% of 5000 is 3750, which in turn is 2.6% of the islands 144,000 population.
So, the reality is – they have confirmed that 2.6% of the islands population have said they will download it – doesn’t mean they actually will though and others that have said no, may change their minds.
polls are useless, as they are easily skewed, if you ensure the variables you use are favourable to the outcome you desire.
Exactly the poll wasn’t used by every single person on the island therefore it is completely useless information end of.
facebook poll
75% of technology users said they would use technology. I’d be worried it’s so low!
Smacks of big brother to me
I’ve just heard on the BBC news, if you have Android you will need to enter your location. Does that mean for some the App isn’t as secure as the government like to make out?
As for the silly poll, it proves nothing, only time will tell what percentage of Islanders will download it, that’s all supposing we are told the truth.
P.S. Any news on wether our Council Leader and Associates will be downloading it?
I’ve downloaded it on an android phone. You only put the first part of your postcode in ie PO33 etc. This is only used if you need to let the app know you have symptoms so you can book a test.
– anyone can type in a partial island postcode from anywhere – for this test to be sure of only isle of wight participants, it needs to ensure that actual phones are only located within the geographical area of the isle of wight, as shown on a map – they must use the GPS in your phone to ensure handets uploading data to the app and on to government servers are within the geographical boundaries of the island, otherwise anyone can upload anything from anywhere and skew the test results.
The app is downloaded from a specific address which for the trial period will only be given to island residents so no GPS required in the first instance. However it does rely on islanders not sharing the link with people on the mainland.
beachcomber … and as it is a link that can be accessed by anyone – it is not secure enough to validate a test base of islanders only. Therefore GPS data from uploads must be known to ensure that test subject handsets are located on the island and not elsewhere or the whole data set will be unreliable.
I don’t believe anything anyone uses is totally secure. Just ask anyone who thought they were safe using a Tor browser and still got caught by the police for downloading something they shouldn’t, usually cheese pizza, you hear enough cases to know that these people thought they were safe from prying eyes.
I’m sure that they will just hide it in the next update for your phone and tablet so they can follow you without permission if people don’t download it
Take polls with a pinch of salt, they never reflect reality, even during elections polls are biast towards their own political persuasion.
I’m 61 and I’ve never had any pollsters call or approach me for my opinion, yet the dodgy media quote polls all the time..
well said clare and the dodgy NHS mandarins had plans for this app nearly a year ago, although it failed in its attempts – now they revive it…

All-singing and all-dancing’ NHS App scrapped
By Ben Heather 31 May 2019
NHSX’s new chief executive has scrapped plans for an “all-singing and all-dancing” NHS App, despite the long-term plan saying the app would be the NHS’ digital “front-door”.
I thought I was paranoid!
Are you the real David Icke???
If you are welcome….
For gods sake will you give it a rest, do you have nothing better to do all day than spend it on trying to convince people not to download this app and to trust one one, If you don’t agree with it then don’t use it. End of. Leave people to do their own investigations and sort through all the fake news which is out there at the moment. We don’t need you shoving it down our throats 24/7.
ditzy – this site is open to free speech, views and opinions – the information I have provided is transcript from other sites indicating the content of meetings held at parliamentary level, as well as accurate and factual views on the operational capabilities of this app.
why are you not demanding that those who are pushing for people to download it, stop their endless posting, trying to encourage people to do just that. To take the view you do on my posts, you must also take the same action against those demanding others download it – that would be balanced
you are trying to shut down free speech and attempting to close off the opposing view point – which is exactly what they do in china – is that what you want – totalitarianism by the state – do as we say or else.
I have just as much right to post on this site as you do – I am not demanding that you be shut down -because I disagree with what you are saying, am I.
And for the record – I am doing the better things I have to do all day, at the same time as posting on this site – multi tasking is easy, if you know how.
Only free speech if the admin like what you type
If they dont like it its removed
Wounder how long this post will last
I agree with Ditzy, you really do need to get a life rather than sit and critisise everybodys input. You really are an idiot of the first order now piss off and let people have their say without stupid comments from a waster like you or as Mr Justice would put it FOOL, and thats being polite as i can think of a lot stronger words to call you than that!
Just a little bit of an over reaction there, since when has anybody “demanded” that we download the app. just say your piece and let the rest of us make our own minds up, your opinion is as valid as the next persons that doesn’t make it the truth and sarcasm gets you nowhere.
People have a right to question anything to do with government and our personal data, let’s listen to each other and judge things for ourselves.
No point telling us to shut up, it’s good to debate….
yes clare – I prefer to hear all view points, especially those I do not agree with – you never know, a single piece of information may be imparted that I have missed which could completely change my view on the subject at hand.
Clare, pollsters will not contact you. If you would like your opinion heard it is easy to join up with companies such as you gov, opinium, etc that provide the data. They offer a small reward for your time.
Thank you for letting me know, much appreciated…
Just another way to watch what we are doing where we are going. Big brothers watching you!!
If you have a phone or tablet/ computer they know what you are doing anyway so why try to hide it
Because rayoflight, once you get use to the attitude of, oh well they know what you are doing anyway, it won’t be to difficult to get you all to join in to the social credit system that China has. If you want to know what that is google it. It’s no conspiracy or lie, it’s happening there and will happen here, it will sock you. So yes, we need to resist any form of tracking for as long as we can, until more people understand, what’s in store for us.
Lol shock you.
Sleepwalking to China – COVID-19 response risks surveillance state result, warns UK biometrics commissioner
The fight against COVID-19 could have longer term consequences of an unwelcome nature unless there’s more transparency
visit ..diginomica.com/ for the full article.
If it’s correct that this was just a Facebook poll then all the lessons from Brexit and the last General Election have been wasted.
When Facebook was new I looked at it and wasn’t impressed. I then read up why Harvard had shut down Facemash and decided that it wasn’t a good idea.
I’m by no means alone.
Modern youth, who seem to spend a phenomenal amount of time on utterly banal so called social media, assume it’s because we’re too old and don’t understand it whereas it’s a positive choice not to use it because we do understand it.
It’s a shame that the otherwise excellent Island Echo assumes a Facebook poll has any validity.
75% of 5000 on a facebook poll is not anything like 75% of the total population of the island which is implied by bob seely and dave stewart.
Look at the end of the day, if you want to use it, download it. If not, don’t. Simple.
If you have a smartphone it can be tracked without your knowledge very easily. Its used to track terrorism suspects etc.
However I doubt anyone of us is that important that the government spies need to know when you leave your house, which route you drive to Tesco and back! Get real
All you paranoid people, I’d love to know what you get up to which makes you so worried about a contact tracing app knowing your location.
Just put your smartphone under your Tin foil hat!!!
capt chris – whilst you can easily be tracked up to a point using phone data without your knowledge, there are behind the scenes protocols and transparency requirements that must be adhered to, which ensure unscrupulous individuals inside government agencies cannot access and use your data (even that is not perfect either) without just cause.
This type of app, allows government agencies to take the first real steps into having much more, intrusive methods available to them and bypasses all current protective protocols.
this is about the state inching its way into your life further and being able to exact control over your day to day activities – if it so wishes.
What happens if a future government gets in, that is far more extreme and decides to make use of the data gathered over many years to shut down individuals that they disliked or protested against them before they got into power – think about it eh.
State enterprises such as GCHQ etc have ten year plans, 5 year plans, short term objectives, which are then repurposed into longer term, more permanent uses – I suspect most individuals barely plan past lunchtime each day, whereas these agencies plan way into the future.
They need accountability and scrutiny or they will walk all over everyone with government support, as they see fit – in your best interests – complain and you are an enemy of the state.
None given , why cant these people seem to grasp, that the future ( now) surveillance, is not about how many times you go to the shops! It’s about monitoring your attitude, thoughts and actions ,on every part of your life. If you disagree with the authorities for any reason, this is a deduction of points from your score. So what does that mean? It means that if you have low point score, you have less privileges in social. So lets say you want to shop in harrods, low score no chance, removed by police. That’s social credit!
Wow none given, they are really moving fast on all the things we said they would. Just seen an article on wales online live, saying two years and we will be a cashless society! The article even said, this is due to covid, but also said ,there’s no evidence to show that covid can be on cash! Lol. So why get rid of? I think the ,“ I told you so” will come a lot quicker then we thought! Can’t wait.
It’s strange I’ve asked, I guess about ten people about this (I’m a key worker before you roast me for being in contact with that many people) and so far I’ve only found one that said they are going to use it
Once the app. is downloaded your phone is registered on a government server, if you think you have the symptoms of the Covid virus you tap that on the app. and that info. is also sent to the government server, that server then sends a message to all the phones around you.
It’s a modern way of hanging a sign around your neck, ringing a bell and shouting “unclean” although you won’t know who is unclean.
Mark up/down as you like as I’m not bothered. But that’s how it works.
It amazes me that some people are afraid of an app and that they’d rather stick 2 fingers up to their family and friends than download it. Sure, it won’t stop you getting the virus but it may help control it. Some pricks on here will spout “facts and figures” and conspiracy theory but they won’t come up with an idea of the way forward. Let them sit on their arses typing furiously on their keyboards but I, for one, will be downloading the app even if there is a minimal chance of it having any effect. Grow a spine you tossers.
Hello, fool, wheres the conspiracy? I can tell you have a lack of intelligence because you have to resort to foul language, so I dont expect you to understand anything that really matters that is happening right now. Stop reading the sun news paper( full of rubbish) and watching bbc news ( governments brain washing tool) and do some research. Hopefully you understand what research is?.
So where is your comment on a way out of things Mr Justice? Someone obviously hit a nerve for you to reply calling someone a fool.
Yogi the way out of this is educate yourself with the facts first. Research as much as possible, then once armed with the knowledge, empower other people to do the same. Then once everybody knows the truth about this,we can all move together, unstoppable.
The app will not stop cov-19. They need to get off their arses and do some community testing at supermarket queues, a mobile SWAT team bus with a lab for testing. That app is shite.
Well said, quite expected the pathetic comment from Justice as he is just a bully and best be ignored. It was only last week he stated that he was leaving this forum and then lo and behold the dipstick returns with his name calling again, just ignore the pratt.
I was replying to jesus h christ calling people rude names, and staying conspiracy. Yes I did leave the forum, but when I saw black rat calling everyone an idiot that said something he didnt like , then I thought I would return, to point out hes the only idiot on here. Everyone is aloud an opinion( at the moment) even black rat, and everyone’s opinion needs consideration. You can then make a judgement on that post. Dont just disregard someone’s post cause it doent fit in with yours, understand where they are coming from. Then put forward your debate on the subject.
You are just a troll with no opinion of getting out of this mess so answer the question you were asked. So, give us ALL the benefit of your vast knowledge and answer…….what is your plan to get everyone out of this situation?
I cant give a direct answer because unless people understand what you are saying, and it to be truthful and fact, then they just going to be rude and arrogant towards what is being said. In true human spirit( I’m afraid) not sure what it is so it must be rubbish. Until everyone opens their eyes and minds, researchers facts and gets an understanding, we can all then speak as one. Hope all that makes sense
No it doesn’t. Answer the question.
If you don’t understand what I have just said, then maybe just disregard my posts and continue in ignorance to what is going on, and be happy with the belief your government has the answer and the best intention for you. Oh, and try and learn so manners on the way.
hilarious! what petulance
Unless there are going to test everyone who has the app, how it going to work? Does the app also test people. lol.
This will give a false reading. They need to test everyone on the island who down loads the app first, for it to be accurate. Otherwise people that dont show any symptoms, will be walking round with the app, not being tested spreading it. Because you have the phone app people will think they are safe. They still haven’t caught up with testing all key workers.
Was probably 75% of councillors voting on which dog was gonna a shit first ….and here’s the results ….lol
The app failed numerous safety and other tests, would not use it
Mathew Ryder QC of Matrix Chambers opinion says it does not comply with data and human rights law.
Where did they sample the 75% on Isle of White. Sure do they have iphones there?
Isle of White? Where’s that?
Do they all use iphones on Isle of wight?
Even with GPS and Bluetooth turned off Every mobile phone can be tracked. Even by reading and commenting on here you can be tracked. Keep up with the technology for goodness sake. When a mobile phone is turned on it is immediately picked up by the nearest phone mast . So every phone is trackable unless it is turned off.
Why not do your own poll? Surely this would give more accurate numbers
Police and emergency in Norn Ireland will not use the App for security reasons. Worried about ID issues.
An app is no substitute for doing epidemiological surveys in the field. They need to get off their arses and their computers and start to engage with Joe Public. I see massive queues at supermarkets, ideal place for doing blood tests, swab tests, hair cuts, piles checks etc.
To app or not to app, that is the question. My partner and i are both front line workers, my other half can not use the app as phone has NO bluetooth. We have already isolated once but were not allowed to be tested so we do not know if we had the virus or not. The only way to find out who has or who hasn’t got the virus is to test everyone. Testing and repeat testing is the only way to stop this virus spreading……. an app will not stop it as it relies on everyone having the app and then telling it you may have it, and that could be 2 to 5 days after you have come into contact with someone with the virus. So the virus will be spread even if you have the app.
This is hilarious reading these discussions!! Christ we’ll be a totalitarian state by the end of this, spies on every street, cctv tracking our every move, the government tracking all our money transactions, who knows we may cease to be a democracy and be run by a dictator. I’ll be scared to fart if I was to believe the idiocy and scare mongering that is still going on in these discussions.
Quite frankly if you’re scared of a little app that may prevent thousands of deaths, don’t download it, but do not scare the hell out of the rest of the community.
‘none given’, your arguments still stagger me, if they were not so dangerous they would be laughable. Oh, as per my previous posts, please don’t bother with one of your smart ass replies. They’re not smart and they do not impress me and they should not others either.
for all you that are worried about this app just give it a go and when the app is no longer needed dump your phone get a new phone with a new number and the worry has gone its not rocket Science. So you can all join into help if it works thats good if not get a new phone.
Woohoo, it’s officially app day!
The day will be remembered in history when we didn’t save lives, including your own, but the country was annexed by China.
Conspiracist fools.
Jesus H Christ, I like your style.
Your the fool, what part of what has been said is a conspiracy? What social credit? Well use that pea size brain of yours and google social credit and you will see it’s a fact!der? but that’s in China in it? Yes it is, but parts of this ,is at the moment being applied under the Covid banner, and will stay. And now China is on theUN human rights council, anything could happen. So back to sleep mark there’s a good chap.
How stupid do you sound? 30,000 people have downloaded it so far, they’ve restored my faith in this community! Perhaps the likes of you will now keep quiet and shut up- loser
Because of fools like you we will all lose. Brain the size of a pea I fear!
still bigger than your grain of sand
Mark have you not seen the people protesting on the news? About how it is a lie! You really do need to wake up! Fear is spread by the media to control the population. You need to do your own research! And stop following the brainwashed!
Protests are happing in America but they don’t show it on the news! Just full of Coronavirus bullshit!!
Maybe if anyone on this forum had a daughter, son, daughter-in-law and a niece working on the frontline in the epicentre of this disease on the mainland they might have a different point of view on this app.
They’ve been there since the very beginning and willingly.
If I wasn’t deemed too old I’d be there with them.
To None Given and Mr Justice.
You think your so clever, go and spend a week working with my family. Go and do a 72 hour shift in full PPE trying to save lives and holding people’s hands who have tears rolling down their faces because they are terrified knowing they are going to die.
You wouldn’t do that would you?
Your too busy trying to ram you opinions down everyone’s throat and making unnecessary comments about people that don’t agree with you.
SHAME ON YOU.
Giving people facts is not ramming opinions down anyone’s throat. You obviously struggle to read and understand.. I said, everyone is aloud an opinion ,if you agree with it or not that’s irrelevant. At no time have I implied this virus is nothing but Horrible and vile. So what’s the problem? The SHAME is on you sir, for totally disregarding an opinion, without any consideration, and then an attack on free speech, to say opinions, are being rammed down the throats of people. I value your opinion , though it has little content, but it’s an opinion and deserves to be read and understood. It’s easy and lazy to just dismiss someone’s opinion.
loser, just like ‘none given’. You’re a pair of dangerous condescending opinionated idiots.
Well said Islander too, they’re a pair of losers, unfortunately they would have scared many vulnerable in to not using this app. Shameful behaviour …..wait for the smart ass comeback!! So funny!
Just a cursory search on twitter for “isle of wight app” showed this poll with three times the response, showing the polar opposite reaction. Needless to say the reaction to this app Is mixed.
with all of the security concerns and the issue where the app will only work if you’ve been in contact with someone for 15 minutes It seems very doubtful that they will hit the 50-60% Target.
https://twitter.com/jmpsimor/status/1257375577285316608?s=21
I resent your leading comment ‘with just 25% going against supporting the community’! Making an informed decision not to download the app, does NOT mean one is ‘against’ fellow islanders! I work for the NHS and have served my country as an Army Nurse. Your inference that my concerns re privacy, future use of data and lack of GDPR protection when, not if, it is shared with US institutions somehow makes me disloyal, is not only erroneous but deeply offensive. Subjective reporting rather than objective. Shame on you!
