The decision to extend a popular nightspot and restaurant’s licence will be determined this week — after 60 objections are submitted against the plans.
Harbour House on Ryde Esplanade has previously been criticised for the ‘drunken debauchery’ of its customers but is looking to extend its opening hours until 01:30, 7 days a week.
A licensing application, submitted on behalf of the establishment by Karl Harding, will be discussed by the Isle of Wight Council’s licensing sub-committee on Thursday.
Harbour House was granted a half-hour extension to its licence in September 2020 but the same concerns then are still being raised now. The Isle of Wight Council has received 60 objections to the application with only 1 supportive comment.
The council’s environmental health officers have raised concerns about the prevention of public nuisance after receiving numerous complaints from nearby residents about noise disturbance coming from Harbour House.
Last July, officers visited the restaurant at midnight, despite being called there earlier in the day, where investigations found Harbour House had failed to uphold the licensing objective. A formal written warning was issued to Mr Harding reminding him of the future conduct in managing the premises.
Measures have been proposed by Harbour House to mitigate any impact on public nuisance, safety and the prevention of crime and disorder which have been reinforced by Hampshire Constabulary.
An officer from the force’s licensing and alcohol harm reduction team agreed with Mr Harding on some of the conditions and the introduction of further measures they believed proportionate. Some of those include last entry an hour before the premises closes, the installation of CCTV and customer monitoring, with staff undertaking regular patrols to check for early signs of drunkenness.
The council’s licensing sub-committee will take into consideration all the evidence and make its decision later this week.

………….
this clearly shows that harding cannot be trusted to run the place correctly – the opening hours should be scaled back to 23.00 at the latest until such times as he can demonstrate that he can run a drinking establishment in a safe and responsible manner, whereby customers are not surrounded by drunken slobs and those living close by are not having the “quiet enjoyment of the property that they live in” ruined by hardings drunks
harding is not interested in running the place correctly, all he is interested in is selling as much alcohol as possible and the more his “customers” buy the drunker they get.
Will get passed and will keep Island Echo busy with stories this summer.
This is a holiday island, and not a retirement home.
This establishment has no near neighbors, only selfish people who don’t like any noise after 7pm.
This island don’t like people having fun.
No wonder all of our youngsters move to the mainland.
Nothing but killjoys.
Ting tong, you say that there are no near neighbours, what about those visiting or staying on their boats in the harbour, don’t they count? There is too much loutish behaviour through drinking on the Island already why should anyone need to drink after 12.00 pm?
PS Why don’t you use your real name, it wouldn’t be Harding, would it?
ting tong – clearly you do not live opposite that racket.
I thought you were making a point about those of us who are against the extension.Friends live by the place and are fed up with the noise late at night.
Who would ever have thought that living on a sea front property in a busy seaside town on a tourist island could cause such issues for a certain type of people who don’t like noise ? And the question about the people that are living on the boats…… well they should not be.
The stench that they make is more of a health hazard then the sound of a bit of music and laughter from the youngsters and tourist enjoying life.
Maybe, you should give it a go ?
