29 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have now sadly died at St Mary’s Hospital since the coronavirus pandemic began with a further 6 dying in the local community, latest figures reveal.
The latest victims of the deadly virus passed away at St Mary’s Hospital on Friday (2) and Saturday (1), it has been confirmed this afternoon (Tuesday). The death toll previously stood at 28.
25 people have now recovered from coronavirus according to the Isle of Wight NHS Trust.
Alistair Flowerdew, Medical Director at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:
“Sadly, we can confirm that four people being cared for at St Mary’s Hospital who had tested positive for coronavirus have died.
“The four women, aged between 80 and 87, had underlying health conditions.
“Their families have been informed and our thoughts and deepest condolences are with them all at this difficult and distressing time.”
It has been confirmed through the Office of National Statistics that 6 Islanders have also died in the community (outside of the hospital environment) as of 24th April. This brings the Island’s total death toll to 35.
As of 4th May, 143 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded on the Isle of Wight. This number remains fairly low, even after the launch of a testing facility at Medina Leisure Centre car park.

Could we not have the poor deacesed persons ages, and whether the poor victims had other health conditions which could have worsened their chances as we used to be informed of.
Without such, the sceptical may feel that such is being held back because younger and healthier are now being taken from their loved ones, and it is worrying to not know as many facts as are practical without divulging personal information of course.
Also how many are left with disabilities as a direct result from surviving this virus?
I think it may be beneficial to be told the whole truth as if it is worse than feared now, it may prevent those getting a little blasé to being very carful to change for the better if they or their younger loved ones are now more at risk than first realised.
Rumours are sure to abound, and the full truth is important to quash such.
I doubt the families victims read this, but so sorry for you all.
Why are people dying in care homes that should obviously have been in hospital?
Many people in care homes have many health problems that’s why they are in care homes, some live for years and some unfortunately don’t.
I personally think all governments what ever political persecution, see the elderly as a burden, even some people from younger generations think likewise.
Please people stay home
you want people to stay at home – but you want food, water, electricity, gas, internet, banking, waste water removal, rubbish collections, mobile phone connectivity, Nhs staff, public transport and many other things we take for granted in the Uk to carry on working.
Unless the staff that provide the above services go out, then all services will stop – guess you are ok with them risking their safety to provide you with your utilities etc.
i agree with martin just giving out numbers is not enough. we need to know more if we are to avoid catching this awful virus what underlying medical condition ,age, ect we don’t need names or personal details ,if the government and the NHS want our help then stop treating us like children and give us facts.
Go look on the ONS website.
Information is out there if you could be arzed to look
We all want want but surely the best solution to all this is to make the lockdown more severe….we hear on the radio STAY at home but then somebody decides to open up bq and then talk of coming out of lockdown…..I won’t b going any where till at least a month after no new cases or deaths
nige – you will be indoors for ever then – as this virus is now part of the family of coronavirus that circulate through human society. There used to be four, now there are five. Get used to this being part of life now.
Got to really feel for residents in care homes affected. The virus has arrived at about a quarter of homes on Island. When the dust settles, there should be some insight into how this happened, with lessons to be learned for future generations. Care homes really should be safe havens. Very sad.
Sadly those care workers all go home to their families and the residents are in contact with so many throughout the week….care homes have not been tested
Etc etc etc….I have a loved one in a care home and I hope and pray they get through this safely ….so worried
Sadly carers also take it into the homes! I have seen carers in uniforms shopping and meeting friends and hugging them. Do they think they are invincible!!!!
Seems the carers themselves and their management need educating
you should be grateful that the carers didn’t call into work and say “I am not coming in, it is not safe to go out, if everyone else gets to be locked down” – then what, all those residents die.
instead of preaching about how the staff should be educated – how about acknowledging the risk they take to provide the care to yours and others family members in their final years.
I’d like to know how did CORONA end up in the care homes in the first place, should there not have been procedures in place to stop this from happening as it must of come from the outside. It’s not just one facility either it’s happened numerous times. Please can any health professional explain how this tragedy occurred.
Paul, I suppose the care homes who have kept corona out could probably suggest some answers. Which are the majority after all.
Unless everyone who has to go in or out of a care home ie Carers cleaners deliveries cooks etc are tested it’s going to happen. Unfortunately they can’t have a complete lockdown and if someone has the virus with no symptoms they could take it in without knowing. That’s why testing is so important for Carers etc.
