2 adventurous sailors have set off from Yarmouth on a venture that will raise money for South Wight Area Youth Partnership (SWAY) to support young people and their families – a voyage estimated to take 3 months!
Susannah Seely and Didi Nicholson both live in South Wight and own a small sailing boat called Seahorse, a 26’ long Contessa built in 1969. They have sailed the boat together in Yarmouth and the Solent but decided they would like to undertake the adventure of sailing around Britain and they decided to raise money while doing it.
They set off on 14th April with a blessing from Reverend Jackie Maw and a teddy called Billy from Brighstone School for company.
The journey is approximately 2000 miles and the boat goes around 4 knots (approximately 4 nautical miles an hour) so allowing for bad weather holdups they anticipate a journey time of 3 months give or take.
They have chosen to raise funds for SWAY because they think it is a great charity doing motivational work for the young people and families of South Wight. SWAY runs youth activities across the South Wight both virtually and otherwise.
Reducing the isolation during lockdown, young people were able to come together and have fun in many ways, communicate with each other and the youth workers. 1-1 mentoring and family work has also continued and the charity is looking forward to the time when young people and their families can get together to enjoy activities.
Susannah and DiDi are asking visitors to their site www.Seahorse184.com to donate via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/seahorse-184. For further information about SWAY, go to www.southwightyouth.org.
