26 Islanders have now died at St Mary’s Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19, according to today’s (Friday’s) figures from NHS England.
The death toll has increased from 25 to 26 with the latest victim dying at St Mary’s on 29th April. On the flip side, 22 people have now recovered from the deadly virus and have been discharged from hospital.
Earlier this week it was revealed through the Office of National Statistics that 3 Islanders have also died in the community (outside of the hospital environment) meaning the total number of Islanders to die with COVID-19 now stands at 29.
107 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded on the Isle of Wight – a number that has only slightly increased this week from 101 on Sunday. There could be another rise when the latest data is released this evening.
A statement from the Isle of Wight NHS Trust is expected in due course.

Sadly there will be more to come, and anyone of us could be part of the satistics..
26+3 =59???
Did I miss something or am I really bad at adding up?
I think that should read ’29’ NOT 59 deaths….as 26 + 3 = 29
Worrying enough is the fact that thus far, less come out after being admitted to hospital than die.
Another concern is now we are not being told the age of the deceased, or the once blurb, ‘but they had underlying health conditions’
So are younger people now dying, and more without ‘underlying’ health conditions? Why has such info been dropped?
Also how many recovered are left with long term or permanent health damage from CV?
I know as only been around a while the ‘permanent’ damage is hard to quantify, but hospitals must know if lungs are so damaged that normal life will never be resumed etc.
Would be nice to know as many facts as they can give or educated options, as the silence is deafening and more worrying to us left in the dark, as it make one wonder ‘why’.
Perhaps someone from our hospital could give us some relevant news?
The sensitive need not read such if too distressing. Others like to know what we are facing.
With more facts people may not be as fearful… the media approach thus far (especially the island echo headlines) has been very aggressive and good at instilling fear among the community.
and they say they want US to be the test place for coming of the lock down .THEY MUST BE JOKING
What’s wrong with saying thankfully the death toll has only gone up by one today….
More worryingly, there are still many people who flagrantly ignore or bend the rules of ‘lockdown’ and it is therefore no surprise that C19 numbers continue to rise ! For example, the significant growth in road traffic alone, over the past week or so, most likely reflects a self-easing of the rules !!
No doubt some commentators will offer pathetic excuses for why people behave so anti-socially, ha !
more and more going back to work – and people are bored of it and are going out – people have the right to freedom and the right to self determination -some other human does not have the right to tell another what to do.
99.98% of people will either not suffer or suffer very mild symptoms, no more than the flu and will be fine – this lockdown is no longer necessary and people should be out and about, getting on with life – if you are worried or feel that you are in that 0.02% that might really suffer – then stay in and stop expecting the rest of us to have our lives on hold.
So. Are you an epidemiologist?
no need to be – the death rates v total population already indicate that this is the way in which it is working and the impact it is having.
stop being such a whiny snowflake and hide indoors if you wish – the rest of us are off out.
::sigh:: It’s alright to go on about peoples *rights*, but sadly, it often turns out that one person exercising their *right* to do something can interfere with another person’s rights.
Example, if your neighbour insisted on playing loud music in middle of night when you wanted to sleep.
Or someone starts smoking a cigar or cigarette and blowing smoke in your eye or over your food when you are trying to eat and making you cough and your eyes water.
People used to go on about their *right* to be able to smoke where they wanted before the smoking ban came in. Never mind about that right depriving another person of the right to breathe unpolluted air.!
This is why there *has* to be laws, to prevent people from just exercising what they feel is their *rights* to do exactly as they like if and when they please.
Like people exercising their right to travel all over the world has left us all in this predicament now, at the threat of a deadly virus.
you take responsibility for yourself – if you think you are at risk of something, hide in doors- that is your right
if I wish to go out doors into the sunshine and enjoy the day, that is my right and I will exercise it.
stop expecting everyone to hide away indoors because someone else might get something. It is that someone else that should stay in, not everyone else.
Typical selfish response. You, “none given”, sound like one of those people who if they made a hellish noise all day and night and their neighbours lives a misery , would turn round and say let them move if they don’t like it.
“On the flip side “ ? That’s a bit casual when talking about people dying! Come on island echo have some respect!
The Island Echo, does have full respect of those who have sadly passed away. Clearly they were referring to the low increase in total deaths compared with the larger rise in ‘confirmed’ cases of CV.
All normal right minded people are sorry for the victims and their families, and all very worried ourselves as we all know the high likelihood that any day, within the next year and a half until, if ever, as vaccine is found, then it could easily be us or our loved ones stricken and taken so hideously from us.
It is far better that someone writes honestly, than this over the top, pretending to be so upset, so caring just to appease those who themselves are looking for fault and, as such, clearly have no more respect themselves for highlighting such, as ‘that’ won’t help any grieving relations should they be reading this bb at such a distressing time.
The Echo do a good job getting news to us all fast, so expect a few errors, but imo, this was not even that.
