2 women arrested on suspicion of murdering a man in his 50s in Shanklin have been released without charge, with no further action to be taken.
Investigations into the killing at an address on St John’s Road on Monday night continue with detectives still questioning their prime suspect – a 36-year-old local man. However, a 29-year-old woman and a 52-year-old woman – both from the Isle of Wight – won’t be facing any further action.
Armed Police from both sides of the Solent were deployed to Shanklin shortly after 22:10 on Monday when reports of an ‘altercation’ were received. Officers found 2 people with injuries inside a terraced house near the junction with Orchardleigh Road.
Despite the best efforts of medical teams, the life of a man in his 50s couldn’t be saved. His next of kin have been informed and formal identification procedures are ongoing.
The second man found at the address, a 36-year-old man, remains in hospital having sustained injuries during the incident. It is understood he suffered stab wounds to the stomach. He remains under Police detention on suspicion of murder.
A cordon remains at the crime scene and Police are expected to be keeping a presence at the address until at least Friday.
Superintendent Jim Pegler said:
“The investigation into this death remains ongoing, and you can expect to see a continued police presence at the scene in St Johns Road and the surrounding area as officers conduct their enquiries.
“I would like to reiterate that we believe this to be an isolated and contained incident with no wider risk to the public.
“We thank the local community for their patience while officers continue to carry out their enquiries in the area, and again ask people not to speculate on the circumstances or the identities of those involved. We will endeavour to provide you with further updates on this investigation when we are in a position to do so.”
