A rear-end shunt involving several vehicles on a main road in Ryde is causing travel delays in the area this afternoon (Monday).
The incident has occurred on the West Street crossing outside Ryde School.
No one is thought to have been injured.
Traffic heading into Ryde via Queens Road is backing up towards Binstead Road, with the tailbacks in the area also causing issues for those heading out of the town via Victoria Street to Five Ways junction.
West Street remains open, although it is partially blocked.

Quite obviously a case of of driving without due care and attention, coupled with driving far too close to the car in front.
To maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you, drivers should always observe the two second rule, so easy to check, when the vehicle in front of you goes past a lamp post, say in your mind “one thousand, two thousand”, if you can say this before you pass the same lamp post, then you are driving at a safe distance.
Conversely if you pass the lamp post before you have said “one thousand, two thousand” then you are driving far too closely and if it breaks hard you will slam into the rear end of the vehicle, which is obviously what happened and to these vehicles that slammed into each other.
Lee. You should join the traffic police!
Why the sarcasm, Lee is only stating the guidance from the highway code and it is a pity so few drivers take note of it, tailgaters are a menace on the roads.
was that one or two thousand what if there are no lamp post
Is it? You were there then? Thought not. Rear end shunts like this are easy in stop, go traffic.
Only if your a throttle happy twat in a Hurry I personally have never hit a car in the rear end in stop and go traffic or any other situation it’s far easier to not go into the back of the car in front by not driving like an arrogant ass who thinks they are more important than anyone else and in the current weather conditions a 4 second gap is advised.
These vehicles didn’t slam into each other! 1 slammed into the other
The phrase you need to say is ‘Only a fool breaks the two second rule’ not as above which only takes one second to say!
Pull over exchanging details old school. Yes I no some will say he/she may be drunk or drugs. But it has always been like that. Don’t milk it.
7 idiots not using common sense…
No, it was actually 4 cars, not ‘several’… Third car back from the first car was badly damaged. three people not paying proper attention/driving too close/ on phone / kiddies fighting in the back. Who knows why? Only those involved.
No no no , the new way is to jump out abandon the vehicle in the middle of the road and all shout at eachother as no one can possibly be in the wrong. Everyone call the police and don’t move any vehicles even though they all are on and running.
You have taken the words out of my mouth
Pull those trousers up lad and get that handbag of’t thoughs shoulder…
You need to be a total moron to go into the back of someone in slow moving traffic but 7of them one into the other was it idiots day out in Ryde today or the blind drivers rally
