Ryde’s Rowing Club’s young Coxswain, Matt Brading, made a stunning competitive debut for the Club at Poole Regatta on Saturday.
Matt coxed the Clubs Novice “A” crew of James Smith, Callum Lockhart, Will Ford and older brother Sam Barding to victory in both the heat and the final of the Men’s Novice Fours event – for which he was then awarded the “Cox of the Day” trophy. This crew is now promoted to Coastal Junior status – where they will compete for the rest of the season.
The young Men’s Novice “B” crew of Ben Toms, Dom Douglas, Steven Soal and Matt Jeacock coxed by Dale Buckett, with an average age of just 15, showed promise in their heat finishing in 4th place but failing to make the final. The raced again in the Boys J16 event finishing 5th in the final and Steven Soal then completed a busy day racing in the Boys J16 single sculls event where he finished in 5th place.
The Club had further success in the Double Sculls event where the Clubs Andy Hicks raced in a composite crew with Southampton’s Ed Crampin winning the event by three lengths. Andy had less success in his Men’s Novice Sculls event where he finished 4th in the heat – failing to make the final – after a disputed incident at the turn which may have effected the result. Ryde’s other Novice sculler – Dale Buckett – also failed to make the final – but Senior Sculler Mick Jenner finished in 2nd place in his final.
