Cyclists of all ages are being invited to a free bike marking event in Ventnor next week, helping stolen bicycles find their way back to their rightful owners.
Ventnor Youth Group and Ventnor Town Council have organised the community event with support from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
It will take place at The Green Room at Salisbury Gardens, Dudley Road, Ventnor, on 24th September between 16:30 and 18:30.
Anyone with a bike is welcome to attend, regardless of age, with no charge for the service.
Those attending will be able to have their bicycle security marked with a unique BikeRegister ID and warning label before registering its details on the national BikeRegister database.
The scheme is designed to help prove ownership, deter thieves and increase the chances of a stolen bicycle being identified and returned to its rightful owner if it is subsequently recovered by Police.
BikeRegister is recognised and used by police forces across the UK.
Jordan Royl, Ventnor Town Council’s Youth Opportunities Officer, has organised the event with support from local Police.
She has said:
“With thanks to the local police force, I have been able to organise a bike marking event.
“This is to get your bike registered and on the national database, so that it can be returned to its rightful owners should it be stolen and sold on.
“The event is open to anyone of any age, with a bike.”
There is no need to book, with cyclists able to drop in at any point between 16:30 and 18:30.
Bicycles use to have serial numbers on them and
always use a decent padlock.
