A Fiat 500 has been left on its roof, and the driver has fled the scene on foot just past the Blacksmiths this afternoon in what makes the third RTC of the afternoon on the Isle of Wight.
Officers received reports of a Fiat 500 having overturned on the Calbourne Road carriageway at around 16:30, with witnesses telling Island Echo that a member of the public who witnessed the crash initially turned to pursue the driver.
On scene, units from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary alongside firefighters from Newport are working to ascertain the location of the driver, having arrived on scene to find the vehicle empty.
There is currently no driver or passengers with the vehicle, and it is unclear how the Fiat came to be on its roof.
At the scene, unusual items could be seen to have fallen out of the vehicle, including a china teapot, maps and a copy of The Telegraph.
Policing units have begun their search in the surrounding area for the driver as well as any passengers that may have been inside the travelling vehicle.
Motorists travelling along Middle Road should approach the area with caution.
UPDATE @ 17:35 – A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that officers have located and detained a man on Betty Haunt Lane.
The spokesperson said:
“We were called at 4:36pm with reports of a single vehicle collision on Calbourne Road.
“A car rolled onto its roof before the driver exited the vehicle and left the scene on foot.”
