A yellow weather warning for heavy rain and severe gales has been issued for the Isle of Wight this weekend.
The IW Met Service has issued the warning, which is due to come into force at 13:00 tomorrow (Saturday). Islanders can expect winds of up to 60mph to develop, with gusts in high and coastal places of up to 70mph. Persistent rain will also arrive with 20-30mm falling in some areas.
It’s expected that the strong winds will bring down a lot of tree debris such as leaves, twigs and branches. There may even the odd downed tree here and there. Heavy and persistent rain will give treacherous driving conditions in places with lots of surface water and localised flooding, along with poor visibility at times due to driving rain and spray.
Very large waves of up to 5 meters along the southern and western coasts of the Island leading to extremely hazardous conditions for small watercraft. However no breaching of sea defences is expected due to the relatively small tides, but beaches on the west and south coast may see occasional and unexpected “surges” of water, so extra care must be taken if in these areas.
