Cowes Sports were left to reflect on a night of missed opportunities as Hamworthy Recreation took the points at Westwood Park on Thursday evening.
The Yachtsmen made a positive start and created the clearer openings during the first half. Scott McFarlane went close early on before picking out Phillips, whose effort flew over the bar.
Tattersall was a constant outlet and twice went close, first forcing a save and then seeing a chip drift narrowly wide. Mumford also came within inches of breaking the deadlock after a mazy run ended with a strike against the post as Cowes applied sustained pressure.
Hamworthy offered little in response for much of the half, their first meaningful effort arriving late on but flashing wide. The visitors remained organised, while Cowes’ attacking rhythm was occasionally disrupted by stoppages, with Tattersall among those cautioned as the game became increasingly scrappy approaching the interval.
Half Time: Cowes Sports 0-0 Hamworthy Recreation
The pattern of the contest shifted early in the 2nd half when a defensive mix-up allowed Jimmy Fry a simple finish to give Hamworthy the lead (0-1).
Cowes continued to push forward in search of a response, but the visitors grew into the game and doubled their advantage on 75 minutes through Chris Long (0-2).
Despite the setback, the Yachtsmen continued to create chances. Mumford was denied from close range, while Carter-Knight saw a well-struck volley pushed away by the goalkeeper late on.
However, Cowes were unable to turn their pressure into goals and were ultimately made to pay for their earlier missed chances.
