The Island’s dwindling night time economy has taken another hit as it is announced Wyld in Newport has closed with immediate effect.
Wyld, described as being a fun party venue with a classy edge, has been part of Newport’s night life for the past 4 years having opened in October 2021, but it has been announced this morning (Boxing Day) that the venue has closed its doors.
All staff have been informed that they’ve lost their jobs.
The loss of the venue on the junction of Pyle Street and Town Lane – the former Pizza Express premises – is not only a blow for the night time economy, but for the Island’s county town as a whole as yet another prominent building will be sat empty.
Fever Nightclub closed its doors back in October, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Owner Josh Peverley has urged Islanders to support local pubs, bars and restaurants – with a stark warning that Dry January and the looming wage increases in April mean establishments need customers ‘more than ever before’.
It’s said that the timing of the closure has been out of Josh’s hands and he is asking for compassion at this time.
Anyone with a reservation for the coming weeks will be contacted in due course. Suppliers with outstanding payments will also be contacted.
The news comes during what has already been a terrible month for the Isle of Wight’s economy, with the announcement of 300 jobs being culled at Vestas and news that Hovertravel is looking to cut 17 jobs.
Just the start of what is going to happen in
