Gurnard’s Woodvale Road will be closed for nearly 6 months from today (Monday) as Southern Water works to reduce storm overflows.
Between Monday 3rd February and Tuesday 29th July, Woodvale Road – between its junctions with Baring Road and Prince’s Esplanade – will be closed to through traffic. Resident access will be maintained for the local area at all times.
The works will see 13 raingardens and 6 permeable paving sections installed in a bid to reduce the affects of storm overflows.
A storm overflow is a safety valve that releases excess rainwater and wastewater into rivers or seas when the sewer system is overwhelmed.
A spokesperson from Southern Water has said:
“As part of our work to reduce storm overflows we’re working to make highways drainage more sustainable – so surface water doesn’t run straight into our sewers and risk overloading them when rainfall is intense.
“The greening of Woodvale Road will see 13 raingardens and 6 permeable paving sections installed. This means the road will be closed to through-traffic until mid-July but access for residents will be maintained throughout.
“We are working with the support of Island Roads, as part of a joint effort with Isle of Wight Council, and have been in touch with local residents about the work. We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we continue in our efforts to reduce storm overflows and protect the environment.”
Southern Water has said that customers in the area were informed about the work through letter drops and a customer drop in session held before Christmas.
