The third annual Workplace Walking Challenge, held from 7th March to 15th May 2016, has been hailed a success.
An impressive 120,480,221 steps were taken by the 205 walkers who registered, resulting in a distance of almost 57,046 miles.
The aim of the 10-week challenge was for walkers to test themselves to increase their number of daily steps, from their initial steps submitted during the baseline week. The final 2 weeks culminated with the Walking Festival, where participants had the chance to trial some new walks and add to their steps even further.
The winning team with the biggest average increase in their weekly steps was Pertemps, whose 5 team members each received a pair of Hi-Tec walking boots and a silver One Card membership from 1Leisure, for their efforts. Debbie Bates; Sarah Holmes; Ellen Dennison; Laura Wilkes and Bethany Remington-Staley completed 3,168,561 steps between them.
Winner of the individual challenge, Claire Dodd of Ryde Academy, also received boots and a silver One Card membership. She completed 1,050,870 steps. Members of runner-up team, the Isle of Wight Council Sports Unit, each received a 3-pack of Hi-Tec walking socks.
The event, developed in conjunction with the Isle of Wight Council’s public health team was promoted as part of the 18th Isle of Wight Walking Festival.
Councillor Shirley Smart, Executive Member for Public Transport, Tourism, Recreation and Heritage, said:
“The response to the workplace challenge has yet again been fantastic. I am thrilled that so many people took part and I would like to congratulate all those who entered, but particularly Pertemps, Claire Dodd, and the Isle of Wight Council Sports Unit for their efforts.
“It is a brilliant opportunity, not only for improving personal fitness levels and promoting a healthier way of life, but for encouraging positive relationships and team building in the workplace.”
