Police descended on the town of Sandown in force last night (Saturday) – to arrest a woman for damaging a garden wall.
5 police vehicles and ambulance responded to Avenue Road at around 19:15, following reports that a garden wall outside the front of an address had been damaged.
Island Echo was initially led to believe someone had been assaulted with a brick, leading to a response from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has today confirmed that a 30-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage only.
She was taken into custody and held at Newport Police Station overnight for questioning.
UPDATE SUNDAY – The woman has been bailed until 7th June as enquiries continue.

More bad news for Sandown, maybe rollout
CCTV in Sandown first, that seems to be the
worst place on the island at present.
Absolute nonsense.
Only 5 police cars. No air ambulance. Come on Isle of Wight we’re slipping.
Ye cant believe helicopter not involved..
Omg… Overkill much? How much did that cost us? The police are an embarrassment
Can it really have required five police cars and an ambulance and all the crew in those six vehicles to adress a problem of a woman damaging a garden wall. Meanwhile, we are told that police don’t have the resources to attend burglaries. Who is responsible for the deployment of these officers? The waste is clearly massive and undermines the arguments for more resources being needed. The police need to do better and the PCC should be asking questions – that’s her job.
Exactly! But you won’t see a single cop on a rowdy Saturday night patrolling the streets of Sandown, Ryde, Shanklin, Cowes, Ventnor etc. That might actually entail some necessary interaction. Too bad if if tourists (lifeblood of the island) are put off by the drunken yobs, IOW cops don’t want to actually do their job, it’s too scary!
Wow!! 5 police vehicles for one woman who damaged a garden wall, really? Ridiculous.
Once the local beat Bobby would have dealt with it…..
Yes, when I was the local bobby in 1962 I would have been the available team! Sorted and noted in the book! Job done!
Those were the good old days, nowdays
too many vehicles, we need boots on the ground.
Those police would serve better on the roads and around the towns on the Island.
So what wete they doing until the garden wall incident?
Bit like buses, don’t see one for ages,
then they all turn up.
There was more to it than has been reported. The police did a brilliant job.
