However, Shanklin were competitive throughout the game, with an early opportunity falling to Cory Sanderson, who shot directly at Gearing when clear on goal. It took until the half hour mark for the home side to take the lead with a superb strike from Chris Elliott (1-0). Jez Conway came close to adding a 2nd a few minutes later, but had his shot fisted over the crossbar by Shanklin keeper Wilson.
