A yellow weather warning for strong gales has been issued for the Isle of Wight, with winds of up to 70mph expected overnight with further gales and squally showers throughout Tuesday.
IW Met Service warns that a spell of windy and sometimes wet weather will affect Southern England tonight and overnight into Tuesday morning, continuing throughout the day until tomorrow night.
Wind gusts of 65-70mph are likely to affect many parts of the Island between 23:00 and 05:00 tonight with frequent gusts and driving rain at times.
A second but more intermittent spell will develop through tomorrow daytime in the form of heavy, squally showers. The wind in and around the heaviest of the showers could see localised gusts of 70-80mph at times, however, between the showers the wind will be much lighter, averaging at a speed of around 30mph.
The showers will clear through during the evening.
Islanders should be aware of the risk of large waves around the Island’s beaches with blowing foam, spray and shingle. No flooding is expected
There will also be a risk to high sided vehicles on the more exposed routes such as The Downs and also along southern and western coastal roads.
Delays and cancellations to public transport, especially cross-Solent travel, as to be expected.
