A function room behind Ventnor’s Better Days Cafe could be leased to a community group on the Isle of Wight, following discussions between local leaders and the property’s landlord.
Plans had previously been submitted to convert the events space at 64 High Street into a residential flat, prompting strong objections from Kirsty Chapman, owner of the Better Days Cafe, who said the proposal could force her business to close.
However, an alternative option has now emerged after County Councillor Ed Blake and Ventnor’s deputy mayor, Steph Toogood, met with the building’s owner to explore the possibility of a community lease.
The applicant’s agent, Phil Salmon Planning, has said the owners remain committed to investing in the Grade II listed building to ensure its long-term maintenance.
Cllr Toogood has said:
“Ventnor is in desperate need for indoor community-use areas. We also require spaces for youth activities and inclusion. The function room is an ideal size, layout and most importantly, location, for such a place.”
Cllr Blake has said:
“We have discussed a fair potential rent for the room, and the addition of a separate utilities supply so a new community group can take on the room.
“I’d like to thank the owner for meeting with us and having an honest conversation about a potential way forward. There has been a large public interest in this, and I’m pleased there looks to be a way to facilitate what the community wants.”
The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports that the next step will be to assess demand and potential opportunities to confirm whether the project is viable.
A drop-in session is expected to be held in the New Year, with the date yet to be confirmed.

Great to hear this news
If Steph Toogood is involved steer well clear. Also if anything to do with “Bitter Days” cafe as well. Let’s encourage kids to smoke and throw chinese food all over the place. Community space yes, but not if they have anything to do with it.
LOL!
Really welcome news
