34-year-old Jamie Clarke from Carisbrooke has been handed down a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for robbery today (Friday) following the mugging of a man in his 80s back in April.
As first reported by Island Echo, an elderly man had his pension money stolen from outside the Tesco Express store in Ventnor High Street on Friday 15th April – an incident that shocked the local community and prompted a collection fund to be started.
Within just a matter of days Clarke, of Carisbrooke High Street, was arrested by Police on suspicion of robbery and charged with the offence. He appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 20th April where he did not enter a plea.
Clarke was remanded in custody at HMP Isle of Wight ahead of today’s trial at the Isle of Wight Crown Court in Newport, where the 34-year-old entered a guilty plea and was given a 30-month sentence by Her Honour Judge Sullivan QC.
