Police are continuing their crackdown on vehicles being driven on the Island’s roads illegally, both day and night.
Officers stopped and later seized a VW Passat on Fairlee Road, Newport late yesterday afternoon (Friday). The car was being driven without insurance, resulting in the Police seizing the vehicle and reporting the driver, who will soon appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.
The owner will need to both insure it and pay recovery costs in order to get the car back.
Overnight, Police stopped a black Vauxhall Corsa – once again in Newport.
The car was stopped on Lugley Street in the town and the driver was found to be driving without a licence and without insurance.
Unsurprisingly, the car was seized and the driver will also be appearing before Magistrates.

Well done but would be better if cars were crushed in front of the owners!
What did the car do wrong?
I say crush the owner instead.
Crushed yes, but take the culprit to the breakers to watch it crush …
Would only worked if they cared about their cars. And having no insurance says otherwise. People who care about their cars drive carefully and have all the requirements in place.
These people don’t give a $$$$ about the cars or anyone else. They will just go and buy another and drive it with no insurance. The only fix is more police so that they no longer benefit from doing so.
No, better idea if the car is in good condition, sold in front of the owner and the proceeds would cover the cost of the arrest.
Why not order the sellars to c insurance before they hand the car over
That won’t work, cos you have a cooling off period, so you can cancel it
I dread to think how many uninsured vehicles there are on the Island, is it more or less than 1 hundred?
c.90,000 registered cars on the Island. UK police estimate Nationally there are over 1 million uninsured drivers on the road (4%). Not even allowing for uninsured hotspots we are probably looking at c.3,600 of them on our roads.
I’ve had my driving license since 1980 and I’ve only ever been stopped twice, so there’s a fair chance people will get away with it.
Perhaps there is a way of tracing uninsured drivers through the vehicle registration?
Thats exactly how they have been doing it, for at least a decade now. ANPR will also tell the police if there is tax, mot or insurance now – and its pretty much fully automatic even in the patrol car let alone on the many CCTV,s dotted around….
So why so few being caught?
lack, or unwillingness to enforce
Most police don’t have ANPR here. Lack of resources and money etc. All speed cameras on the isle of wight have been turned off for years now as well.
Straight to Cliftongrade, do not pass go.
Well it’s good that some think is bein done, if they hit you youv got to claim off your policy
HOW ABOUT TOWING VEHICLES AWAY THAT ARE PARKED ON PAVEMENTS!
LARGE VAN WHEN YOU DRIVE DOWN GREAT PRESTON ROAD PARKED ON PAVEMENT
OUTSIDE THE COUNCIL HOUSES BEFORE YOU APPROACH NICHOLSON ROAD
MAKES IT DANGEROUS WHEN DRIVING ALONG THE ROAD
What you suggest would cost a lot more than the police have available.
All vehicles parked on Pavements causing obstructions for other drivers & pedestrians
Should be crushed.
There is always a van parked on the Pavement along Gt Preston Rd Ryde
On the bend outside old council houses
My hare-brained idea, you shouldn’t be able to buy fuel without a valid insurance card coded with the vehicles registration. Would cost a lot to implement but we’d get rid of these ass clowns once and for all.
Think the point is being missed ,,, if no insurance and was to hit or seriously injured someone in another vehicle or pedestrians the injured party would get no financial payout, whatsoever and those injuries could mame someone for life
The owner of the silver VW in the photo must be a complete idiot. Driving round with your rear number plate blacked out is simply asking to be nicked!
The number plate has been blacked out for the photo only. As per ‘legal duties’ we, as the readers of the article, are not allowed to see the registration number of the illegal driver. Another fine example of a criminal being protected.
Phil…..He’s joking…lol
No Lisa, look closely, that rectangular wall of black is clearly on the car and has not been edited in any way..
Spot on Ha Ha Ha
