The Isle of Wight Council is about to start work on cutting down a number of trees at Los Altos Park in Sandown, whilst pollarding a large number of others. Holm oaks, sycamores, goat willows and bay laurels are to be felled to ground level, with other trees to be pollarded to a height of between 8m and 10m. Trees with elongated limbs will be cut back by as much as 40% with a 20% height reduction. It’s said that the management of the trees in question – a former Victorian hedge line – has long since lapsed with the trees now tall and structurally unsound. The local authority’s intention is to restore the original Victorian hedge line of holm oaks, whilst retaining pollarded standard trees at 7-10m spacings within the hedge. Gaps in the existing line of holm oak hedge will be planted with holm oak whips. It’s understood as many as 64 trees in total will be either removed or pollarded. In early 2021 the Isle of Wight Council was criticised for its tree works at Los Altos, which dramatically changed the appearance of the park. It’s unknown when these latest work will begin.

I would like to know if the council are planning to engage with the local community and address their concerns about the tree removal and what opportunities there are for public consultation or feedback on the tree management plan?
The isle of wight council are a joke the park was left to the people of Sandown yet nobody consults them won’t be long before they start plans for housing
I’ve just moved here 8wks ago, & found this park on a Dog walk. Absolutely loved all the Beautiful different species of Trees & how natural the Park was. Understand if Trees are diseased or Broken branches hanging off. But to cut so many is very sad…
All part of the climate hoax
For a country so concerned about climate and natural habitat, there’s so much destruction of trees and green fields for house building.
Not to mention the green taxation!
Just a big ole scam to keep us poor, and idiots get brainwashed into believing it.
always one
Alas, many, many more than one!
There are red squirrels living in the park and it’s illegal to cut down their drey or disturb access to it, so I do hope tree surgeons look closely before cutting and leave any dreys intact. There are babies about at the moment as well.
Best then to report sightings to the Council, but likely will do as much good as reporting on here.
Why must you keep cutting the trees it looks so horrible when everything is bare and last time the park got so waterlogged without the trees to drink the rainfall
