Firefighters were mobilised to extinguish a burning tree in Ryde this afternoon (Sunday).
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene on Rosemary Lane after receiving a 999 call from a local resident who had noticed the tree burning.
1 appliance from Ryde arrived on the scene and began to douse the smouldering trunk using a hose reel jet.
On scene, they were joined by the first informant, local resident Kaiden – who had recently visited Ryde Community Fire Station with his family.
After the fire was extinguished, the crew allowed Kaiden to assist Firefighter Becky Thompson to douse the tree further to cool any remaining hotspots.
If you see a fire in the countryside, contact the fire service immediately on 999. Do not attempt to tackle fires that cannot be put out with a bucket of water.
Remember, do not discard cigarettes or other smoking materials in the countryside. It is also important to clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.
Always take extra care if using a barbecue and only light fires or BBQs in designated areas. Never leave a campfire or BBQ unattended and extinguish them properly after you have finished using them.

Good old British Spirit, all pull together in times of trouble…
Sadly, that’s never going to happen again. Well done to the young lad, it must have been a very exciting day for him, onwards and upwards for his future..
Poor tree. Glad to hear they were able to put out the fire before it could spread to anything else. Hope the tree is not too badly damaged.
I hope so too. The council does not share our sympathies. They would rather get the grant to remain viable and destroy the land that local families have fought for hundreds of years to defend. They have run out of buildings, for hollibobs flats and second homes, to work on. Nice big fires. Ooh, it’s gone. Theatre Royal in Ryde, Town Hall in Ventnor, The London pub in Ryde, pulled down in the dark one night, so it could never be replaced, or questioned. Really clever ‘naughty kids’ did that!
Hi his name is Kaiden its my son,the Fire Fighters must have misheard me im his proud mum
A very proud mum. Well done to your nipper, madam. Regards, Lady Dunstanding.
They put Kaiden in the report.
His face says it all 🙂 How lovely. A real life hero in the making right there <3
Well done to the nipper! What’s the point of saving it though? All of it will be Ryde’s version of Pan Meadows before long. Probably certain people with brown envelopes in their back pockets are targeting the more mature trees to make destruction of the wild space more legal. Bob ‘Shirtsleeves and no tie’ Seely (aka man of the people) still remains silent. Every property owner at the bottom of Ryde should scream! Their properties will flood badly every year when the valley is obliterated.
Good on the youngster, I am impressed. Pig Leg Lane nature reserve is a disaster waiting to happen, the amount of fires started there recently is unbelievable. Two tents and a motor car seat only as an example. Also time to put an age restriction on the selling of barbecue packs at our local shops.
That smile on the kids face is priceless
Trees catching fire spontaneously? Bit like barns catching fire just down the road. There’s an arsonist abroad.
Another barn fire in Ashey not long ago. No fear as such vile people KNOW little punishment will be forthcoming IF they are ever caught.
