Emergency services are responding to a collision between a pedestrian and a car on the main road through Shalfleet this afternoon (Monday).
The incident has occurred at the bus stop to the west of Warlands Lane on the main Newport to Yarmouth road – the A3054.
Island Echo is told that a pedestrian – who is thought to have been crossing the road to reach the bus – has been injured.
Police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are en-route to the scene having been alerted to the incident at around 15:45.
Motorists are being diverted locally. Southern Vectis Route 7 buses are diverting via Elm lane, Calbourne in both directions until further notice.
UPDATE @ 17:08 – A teenage girl has sustained minor injuries in the incident, it has been confirmed.
The girl is being taken to St Mary’s Hospital for assessment and treatment.
That’s the 2nd school kid to be hit by a car there was a lad a few years ago who ended up in the air ambulance with head injuries glad she is not badly hurt
It wasn’t a school child it happened 20 mins before my school bus was there and it’s the first bus to go past that stop
Another old person failing to see while driving
Another PERSON failing to see… forget the OLD.. just bad driving !!
Obviously could not possibly have been that the teenage girl could have been concentrating on her mobile or similar device and walked out into the road without looking at what was coming. Or could it? I am guessing that Jim Bean is equally unaware of the exact circumstances as I am. Just for interest, here is a quote from a scientific research paper “The risk of crash involvement for teen male drivers was 7.75 and 11.1 times as high as the risk of drivers in the safest age group (60–69), for fatal and nonfatal crashes, respectively.”
I knew the driver and can confirm it WAS the teenager girls fault. She decided to run out into the road to try get the bus without looking either way AT ALL!! The driver had to make a sudden stop and was unfortunately in such close proximity it resulted in hitting this girl. It was the girls fault NOT the drivers. Because of that, the driver is now too shaken up and scared to drive again for a while. The teenage girl wouldn’t take that into consideration knowing her actions caused it.
