Traffic disruption will be felt in the heart of Newport from today (Tuesday) as Island Roads works to improve the road surface at Church Litten in a 9-day scheme. Although the northern end of Church Litten will be closed as a through route during parts of the work, Island Roads has phased the project to ensure access to Litten Park (Morrisons store and petrol station, and Marks and Spencer) will be maintained at all times. Pedestrian and emergency service vehicle access will also be maintained and the road will be opened at weekends if work progress allows, and it is safe to do so. In Phase 1 of the work, Church Litten will remain open from Medina Avenue to South Street. During this phase, from Medina Avenue junction for approximately 100m, only the right hand lane (access to Litten Park) will be open. Once drivers are past this point all lanes will become available. During Phase 2, Church Litten will be closed as a through route between Litten Park entrance and South Street, although access to Litten Park will remain open. During both phases, if approaching Church Litten from the west along Medina Avenue, vehicles must go straight ahead, go round St George’s Roundabout and then turn right into Church Litten. The works will take place during the day between 07:30 and 17:00 only across 9 days. An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“We recognise that these improvement works may cause some inconvenience for residents and businesses, but we hope any disruption will be offset by the long-term improvements we are making. “We would like to thank you in advance for your assistance in enabling us to complete these works.”

Is this really needed when the money could have been spent on repairing pot holes ect??
Surely you can see the terrible state it’s in from the picture.
Parts of the surface are almost not entirely flat and smooth and the writing shows signs that some of it is on the point of fading a tiny bit in places.
How can you possibly worry about potholes when faced with minor blemishes like that?
Have they seen the road outside Home Bargains? There are many roads around that desperately need addressing and apparantly this one was at the top of their list? There’s nothing wrong with it
This is a heads-up for anyone who commutes through Church Litten. The upcoming road improvement works are necessary, but the traffic disruption is a concern. The article mentions planned diversions, but could you elaborate on the specific routes affected?
Knowing the exact diversions in advance would be helpful for drivers to plan alternative routes and minimize delays. Thanks for keeping the community informed about these important works.
Pathetic, why do it during the day, in Germany it would be at night and given the stretch of road completely done in 2 nights, without causing too much disruption
Island Roads is run by Brainless Numpty’s that is why.
Not brainless, just working on roads that will cause the most traffic disruption, so they can appear to be doing a lot of work.
Off you go to Germany then!!!
So you’d rather have 4 guys watching one guy do all the work then, all I’m saying is that at least they have the normal person at heart and considered for and get the job done without any excuses
There is nothing wrong with the roads there!!! How about repairing Bridge Rd, Denmark Rd in Cowes?
Just nuts! There is nothing wrong with that road, why can’t they prioritise works at the worst affected places like Heathfield Road, Atherley Road, Taylor Road etc…
Everything in that picture looks fine to me. The only improvement I can see, is finding a way to entice a few people out of cars for non-essential journeys and back on their feet. This will deal with the mould growing on the pavement, through lack of use. 🙂
It reminds me of the very busy road steward yesterday who careers along the undulating and earthquake ridden scenic road that is Surrey Street Ryde to measure a small very important pothole. It’s ok this pothole is a priority!
Why can’t they use the time of this closure adequately and revert the one-way system of this incredibly wide road to the original two way system that was abandoned “temporarily” when the new bus station was built? At least you could expect less traffic jams in the centre of Newport then!
